The Merseysiders have been busy scouting the young Austria international of late, although they are not the only Premier League club to have done so this season, with the likes of champions Manchester United and Arsenal also known to be keen on the versatile defender.

However, it is understood that it is the Reds who are now leading the chase for the 21-year-old, who can operate either as a centre back or a right back, after Rodgers was impressed with the player’s consistent displays at the back for the Austrian champions both at home and in the Uefa Europa League campaign.

Nicolas Gaitan (Benfica)

The Reds boss has already made it clear that he is after some more creativity and inspiration in the middle of the park at Anfield next season, and to that effect the Northern Irishman has been running his eye of the brilliant Argentina international in recent weeks in his side’s Uefa Europa League campaign, where the playmaker has turned in some outstanding performances for the Portuguese giants.

And if recent reports in the Daily Mirror are to be believed, then Liverpool are hoping to be able to lure the player to Anfield next season in a deal worth £16m.

Alberto Moreno (Sevilla)

The young Spain international is already fast developing a huge reputation back in La Liga after an outstanding campaign on the left-hand side of Sevilla’s back four, so much so in fact that the 21-year-old now looks like starting for the world champions in the defence of their crown in Brazil this summer, which means that Rodgers will want to be able to tie up any deal for the player before the tournament kicks off in June.

Rodrigo (Benfica)

Reports have been rife in recent days linking Liverpool with a move for the former Spain Under-23 international, with scouts from Anfield understood to have been watching the Brazil-born striker in action in Benfica’s recent Uefa Europa League round-of-16 clash in which the 23-year-old opened the scoring in the first leg at White Hart Lane last week, although the Reds may have to beat off competition from Premier League rivals Chelsea and Manchester United in order to land the £25m-rated frontman.

Yevhen Konoplyanka (Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk)

The Reds very nearly landed the exciting Ukraine international during the recent January transfer window, only for the move to collapse at the very last minute when the two clubs were unable to reach an agreement over a price for the 24-year-old, although the Merseysiders are still expected to return for the player at the end of this campaign however as Rodgers seeks to add a high-quality winger to his squad at Anfield.
