The ten highest scoring teams n the history of the English game.

The current Liverpool side have found a rich vein of form in front of goal this season, and thanks to the good folks at talkSPORT we can now see where that puts them amongst the highest scoring sides in English football history.

10. Wolverhampton Wanderers 1958/59 – 2.62 goals per game

It’s hard to believe that once upon a time Wolves were a highly successful side, and won three titles back in the 1950s over a space of just six years. This team was the last to do so.

9. Tottenham Hotspur 1962/63 – 2.64 goals per game

Spurs found the back of the net 111 times this season but still only finished in third. They were also the first British team to bring a European trophy back home when they defeated Spanish side Atletico Madrid.

8. Chelsea 2009/10 – 2.71 goals per game

Chelsea became the first team to score 100 goals in the Premier League during what was an incredibly successful season. Coach Carlo Ancelotti claimed a league and FA Cup double and the campaign was capped off with an 8-0 win over Wigan to clinch the title.

A second appearance in the top ten for Spurs. Their side of the early ’60s was the first in English team of the 20th century to clinch the league and cup double after they went on an 11 game hot streak at the beginning of the campaign.

5. Arsenal 1934/35 – 2.74 goals per game

The Arsenal of the pre-war years were one of the most ruthless and prolific sides in the history of the English game, and they hit their peak in the mid-1930s when they clinched a trio of titles.

4. Everton 1930/31 – 2.76 goals per game

The Toffees marched on to their fourth league title by bagging 116 goals. Led by Dixie Dean, who once notched 60 goals in a season, Everton were a powerhouse of the pre-war years.

3. Arsenal 1932/33 – 2.8 goals per game

Led by Herbert Chapman, the Gunners took over the Toffees as champions and smashed their goal scoring record in the process, bagging 118 goals in 42 games a year after the Merseysiders dominated the league.

2. Arsenal 1930/31 – 3.02 goals per game

This Arsenal team was the first to win the league for Highbury club, bagging an astounding 127 goals to win the title with two games to go. The attack of Jack Lambert (38 goals in 34 matches), David Jack (31 in 35) and Cliff Bastin (28 from 42) were merciless, and they chalked up a 9-1 club record top flight win, against Grimsby.

1. Aston Villa 1930/31 – 3.05 goals per game

Amazingly, the Gunners were outscored by second placed Villa in the 1930/31 season. Villa’s top scorer with 49 league goals was Tom ‘Pongo’ Waring, but despite his team totalling 128 goals in 42 games, they still couldn’t catch Arsenal.
