The Germany international only arrived at the club from La Liga giants Real Madrid in the final hours of transfer deadline day last September in a deal worth a whopping £42.5m.

However, despite a hugely encouraging start to his career in north London, the playmaker’s form since the turn of the year has declined, so much so that Ozil has been kin the end of some harsh criticism from both the press and his own fans as well.

But the ex-France international says that the Gunners faithful need to show more patience with Ozil, before also taking the time to remind the Arsenal supporters that even he endured a tough first campaign in the capital.

“Mesut is a very good player,” said Pires.

“For Mesut, it is very difficult. The tempo is not the same. He was like me. I remember the first season was terrible.”
