Ten European Superstars Deemed Surplus To Requirements and Set For Summer Moves

Ten players set to move on this summer after being deemed surplus to requirements at their current clubs.

10. Fabio Quagliarella – Juventus

The former Italian international has been frozen out by the Turin giants this season and was heavily linked with a move away both last summer and during the January transfer window. He was not even included in the squad list for their Europa League campaign this year, and with Lazio and clubs in England all keeping an eye on his situation he will undoubtedly get his move at the end of the campaign.

9. Etienne Capoue – Tottenham Hotspur

The French midfielder only joined the White Heart Lane club last summer from Ligue 1 side Toulouse, but has struggled to get a foothold in the starting XI under both Andre Villas-Boas and Tim Sherwood. However, there is still significant interest in his services across Europe and it is very likely that he will be on his way elsewhere in the summer.

8. Andrea Ranocchia – Inter Milan

The Azzurri international was once heralded as one of the hottest prospects in Italian football, but has recently fallen out of favour at the San Siro. Chelsea had been heavily linked with his signature before the January transfer window, but a move failed to materialise. It’s unknown as to whether the Blues are still interested, but there are a number of Bundesliga sides that would be more than happy to snare his signature.

7. Alvaro Arbeloa – Real Madrid

The 31-year-old former Liverpool stopper is often viewed as the weak link in Real’s back line, and with youngster Dani Carvajal hot on his heels to take over the right-back slot he will likely seek a move before he he pushed out or worse, left to stagnate on the bench.

6. Javier Pastore – Paris Saint Germain

The Argentine international was all set to be the centrepiece of PSG’s new era of dominance in Ligue 1 and Europe, but has seldom lived up to the huge €40m price tag since arriving from Palermo two years ago. Outrageously talented, but on the same hand furiously inconsistent, he could look to reignite his career back in Serie A over the summer.

5. Erik Lamela – Tottenham Hotspur

Another Argentine that has failed to live up to his expensive price tag this year. Lamela starred in Serie A for Roma, and many couldn’t believe that the capital club allowed him to leave for London last summer. However, he could be set for a swift return after a nightmarish year at White Heart Lane as he has fallen out of favour under Tim Sherwood and can’t get a start.

4. Samuel Eto’o – Chelsea

The African superstar has began to find form recently, but that may not be enough to convince Jose Mourinho to extend his contract beyond the end of the season. Jibes about his age have proved unfounded, and there will no doubt be a number of sides across Europe that will gladly snap him up when his deal at Stamford Bridge expires.

3. Nani – Manchester United

The Portuguese attacker has seen his stock at Old Trafford drop dramatically over the past two seasons, and he now looks set for the chop at the end of the campaign as David Moyes looks to overhaul his side in the wake of a disappointing first season in charge. Consistently linked with a move to Juventus, he could finally link up with them this summer.

2. Ashley Cole – Chelsea

It has only taken a season for the veteran left-back to go from being the first name on the team sheet to struggling to get on the bench, and Jose Mourinho may look to move him on to help usher in a new age at Stamford Bridge. Out of contract in the summer, he has seen Cesar Azpilicueta take his place in the starting XI and Ryan Bertrand be offered a fresh lifeline ahead of him.

1. Mario Mandzukic – Bayern Munich

The Croat goal machine was the man to displace Mario Gomez in Bavaria, but now looks set to see the cycle complete itself by being displaced by Robert Lewandowski this summer when he joins from Borussia Dortmund. It is difficult to imagine that Mandzukic will be willing to play second fiddle to anybody and make seek to move on in search of regular game time.
