Manchester United: Five In & Five Out This Summer

Five players United should buy and sell during the transfer window.

To Buy:

Ilkay Gundogan – Borussia Dortmund

United lack presence in the middle of the park, and have over recent years played with the suicidal tendency to leave gaping holes there too. The acquisition of the all action Dortmund star would certainly go a long way to exorcising that. He’s spent the majority of the season out with a back injury, but that hasn’t dampened David Moyes’ resolve in trying to sign him.

Luke Shaw – Southampton

The Saints youngster has earned himself a whole set of admirers this season, and even more since his inclusion into the England national side earlier this year. A natural athlete that never neglects his attacking and defensive duties, Moyes will look to bring him on board this summer to replace Patrice Evra, who has admirably served his time now.

Jan Vertonghen – Tottenham Hotspur

The Belgian international has made his unhappiness at Spurs known this year as they look to miss out on Europe. United may not be able to offer him a direct route into the Champions League either, but playing for them is still an attractive proposition, and if Moyes can convince him to be a part of the rebuilding project them they will have a more than adequate replacement for Nemanja Vidic.

Edinson Cavani – Paris Saint Germain

United may already have two world class strikers at their disposal, but when one such as Cavani becomes available it would be crazy to turn down the chance to bring him on board. He would give United something that they don’t already have, and more importantly he would guarantee goals.

Toni Kroos – Bayern Munich

The Bayern midfielder came close to joining the club during the January transfer window, but the Bundesliga side opted to keep hold of him. However, they have hinted that a deal could be done over the summer, and United would likely be first in line to land his signature.

To Sell:

Ashley Young

Whilst at Aston Villa Young was one of the most attacking talents in the country, but he has failed spectacularly at living up to that billing during his time at Old Trafford. Moyes should cash in now and bring in somebody much more competent and consistent in his place.

Nani

The Portuguese winger was once a tremendous attacking talent that helped the club to a number of titles. However, his influence on the squad borders on the non-existent this season and there is a dangerous chance that he could see his career stall. Juventus are said to be interested and could provide United with a generous fee for his services.

Tom Cleverley

There’s a strange myth that Cleverley is worthy of a starting place for both United and the England national side, but in reality he is not of the required standard for either. Frequently spins golden chances to score and is one of several weak links in the United midfield. However, there will be a club somewhere that would pay quite gladly to have him on board.

Federico Macheda

Despite a bright start to his career the Italian striker has proved time and again that he cannot cut it at the top level. He has endured several loan spells with clubs in England and overseas where he has failed to make an impression and the time is now right for him to make his exit from the club and try to establish himself somewhere where there won’t be as much pressure on him.

Robin Van Persie

He may have carried the club to another Premier League title last season, but this time around he has frequently gone missing. Publicly criticising the manager is not what you want from a star player during a transition phase, and his injuries have only served to highlight how well the team actually play without him.
