Top Ten England Kits Over The Years

The ten best England shirts ever.

With the latest England kits being released CaughtOffside take a look at the ten best over the years.

10. 1974-80

Back when there wasn’t a new shirt released every five minutes, Admiral manufactured this stylish number in time for the 1974 World Cup. Shame they didn’t make it there, though!

9. 1984-87

Worn during the campaign in Spain 82, this slimmed down version was a return to a simpler design that had gone missing in the ’70s.

8. 1997-99

Worn at the World Cup in France 98, it comprised a smart collared design with all the gaudy fantastic design properties of football shirts in the ’90s. Obviously looks better when Paul Ince isn’t bleeding all over it.

7. 2009-10

The first of Umbro’s ‘Tailored by’ range saw the national team take a look to the past in this elegantly simple design that took them to the World Cup in South Africa.

6. 1999-2000 (away)

England went for a bolder shade of red for their away shirt this time around, and it ushered in the new century in style.

5. 1993-94

Sadly, this design will forever be associated with the squad that failed to make it to the World Cup in the USA, which is a shame as it was a wonderfully simple shirt with a fantastic collar to round it off.

4. 1990

Worn solely for the World Cup in Italy, this kit is iconic for more than just Gazza’s tears. It was the last World Cup in which England had a meaningful impact where they made it all the way to the semi final before crashing out to the old enemy, Germany.

3. 1980-83

WOW! Welcome to the ’80s! Admiral announced their arrival into the new decade by plumping for this bold blue and red shouldered design that won itself a cult following that it still enjoys to this day.

2. 2012

One of Umbro’s final incarnations of the England away kit saw them experiment with two shades of blue to combine for this eye catching design. For the first time in a long time England looked like tough opposition, though sadly that was more down to the kit than who was wearing it.

1. 1966

Was it ever going to be anything else? Winning the World Cup is one thing, but doing it in your classier away shirt against the old enemy on home turf is just about the best way. Undeniably the one item of clothing from the ’60s that will never go out of fashion.
