The north London club have struggled at the back, keeping just one clean sheet in their last 13 fixtures, and it’s seeming a problem area Wenger is looking to address.

The Arsenal boss will hope to pip the Toffees to fourth spot and Wenger will then look to bring in 35 year old American custodian Howard to challenge Wojciech Szczesny for the Gunners starting spot.

Howard has been in excellent form this term, keeping 13 clean sheets to help Everton the Premier League’s second best defensive record this term.

Wenger will look to also tempt Benfica defender Garay to provide Arsenal with central defensive alternatives to first choice starting pair Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker with current back-up Thomas Vermaelen set to leave the club this summer.

Garay has done well to revive a career that was stagnating at Real Madrid and has been in rock solid form over the past two seasons but may feel the time is right for a move away from the Primeira Liga.
