The Italian giants had been keen on signing the Belgian international during the January transfer window, but the Gunners weren’t prepared to let him leave during the middle of the campaign.

However, the defender is still primarily being used as a backup to regular first team stars Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny, and Napoli are believed to be keen on relieving him of those duties by offering him more regular first team football.

Sources in Italy have claimed that Rafa Benitez will make him his top transfer target at the end of the season.

Vermaelen’s contract at Arsenal expires in 2015 and the defender recently admitted he cannot say whether he will pen an extension.

When asked if he would consider staying with the Gunners last month he claimed he was unsure, prolonging his decision until the end of the season.

Vermaelen will likely attract more potential suitors should he have a particularly impressive World Cup.
