2014 Premier League Table: Why Liverpool Will Win Title And Chelsea Will Fail

Crystal Palace have had a better 2014 than Manchester United, while Liverpool are the only unbeaten team in the Premier League this calendar year. Check out the full table here!

20. Cardiff City
2014 matches played: 16 (W3, D3, L10)
2014 points: 12
2014 points per game: 0.75

Despite heavy investment both in the summer and in the January transfer window, Cardiff City are in real trouble, and relegation looms.

The gamble of appointing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as manager has not paid off, but the Norwegian coach may earn the chance to rebuild at the end of the season.

19. Newcastle United
2014 matches played: 16 (W4, D1, L11)
2014 points: 13
2014 points per game: 0.81

Newcastle United are in freefall, at least in terms of form.

The Magpies have lost their last five Premier League fixtures, and twelve of their last seventeen, but somehow have held on to ninth place in the division.

Alan Pardew’s popularity amongst the fans at St James’ Park is at an all time low, and big changes will be needed if Newcastle are to improve.

18. Norwich City
2014 matches played: 16 (W3, D4, L9)
2014 points: 13
2014 points per game: 0.81

Norwich City are in a precarious position in the Premier League, and with their three remaining fixtures against Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal, the Canaries ought to have wrapped up more points by now.

17. Hull City
2014 matches played: 15 (W4, D1, L10)
2014 points: 13
2014 points per game: 0.87

Hull City have had a strong season by all accounts, and should they avoid relegation and claim the FA Cup it will truly be a triumph.

The KC Stadium outfit are in the rather unusual position of needing Arsenal to finish fourth to be assured of a UEFA Europa League spot next season, and yet beat them in the cup final, but on the whole it has been a good campaign under Steve Bruce.

16. Fulham
2014 matches played: 16 (W4, D2, L10)
2014 points: 14
2014 points per game: 0.88

Fulham are gradually making strides under Felix Magath this term, but the German’s appointment may have come too late.

The poor form under Martin Jol and Rene Meulensteen before Magath means avoiding relegation looks tricky at this stage.

Still, the Cottagers have been in this position before. England boss Roy Hodgson helped the west London survive by the skin of their teeth in 2008, and Fulham fans will hope for a similarly dramatic escape this term.

15. Swansea City
2014 matches played: 16 (W4, D3, L9)
2014 points: 15
2014 points per game: 0.94

Swansea City have had a difficult 2014, with Michael Laudrup being replaced by Garry Monk as head coach, and having to quickly learn the ropes of top flight management.

If the 35 year-old Englishman can steady the ship, there is certainly potential to once again finish in the top half of the Premier League next season.

14. Aston Villa
2014 matches played: 15 (W4, D3, L8)
2014 points: 15
2014 points per game: 1.00

Aston Villa are just five points clear of the relegation zone, and it is fair to say that the fans are beginning to turn on Paul Lambert.

Injury to Christian Benteke has deprived the club of its only genuine goal threat, and there will be work to be done on improving that this summer.

13. Sunderland
2014 matches played: 15 (W4, D3, L8)
2014 points: 15
2014 points per game: 1.00

Sunderland are still attempting to recover from a poor 2013, with this season begun under the reign of Paolo Di Canio.

Gus Poyet has stabilised affairs to a degree, but has not had the chance to make his mark on the squad, and the Black Cats remain in serious peril of relegation.

12. West Bromwich Albion
2014 matches played: 14 (W3, D6, L5)
2014 points: 15
2014 points per game: 1.07

West Bromwich Albion remain in serious danger of relegation despite relatively encouraging form under new manager Pepe Mel in 2014, but should the Baggies stay up the Spaniard could have a chance to make the team his own.

11. Southampton
2014 matches played: 22 (W6, D4, L6)
2014 points: 22
2014 points per game: 1.38

Southampton had a sensational first half of the season, but have tailed off somewhat in 2014.

Injury to Jay Rodriguez, and the alleged training bust up caused by Dani Osvaldo somewhat disrupted their campaign, but Mauricio Pochettino has done enough to show there are signs for encouragement.

10. West Ham United
2014 matches played: 16 (W7, D1, L8)
2014 points: 22
2014 points per game: 1.38

While the football may not be particularly exciting or fluid, Sam Allardyce clearly gets results, and West Ham United are in no danger of relegation.

With an Olympic Stadium to fill in the coming years though, the Hammers may have to think about their approach going forward.

9. Stoke City
2014 matches played: 16 (W6, D5, L5)
2014 points: 23
2014 points per game: 1.44

Stoke City initially found the transition from Tony Pulis to Mark Hughes managing the team difficult, but have shown encouraging form in 2014, and look set to cement a mid-table finish with which to build upon this summer.

8. Manchester United
2014 matches played: 15 (W7, D2, L5)
2014 points: 23
2014 points per game: 1.53

It was once said that if your team finished above Manchester United, they would likely win the Premier League, but that old adage no longer rings true.

The Red Devils have been disastrous under David Moyes, and most shockingly won just one of their 12 games against the other sides in the top seven, losing eight.

7. Crystal Palace
2014 matches played: 16 (W8, D3, L5)
2014 points: 27
2014 points per game: 1.69

Crystal Palace’s renaissance under Tony Pulis has been quite remarkable. The Eagles have won their last five games in a row, including stunning victories over Chelsea and Everton, and look a far cry from the porous outfit they began the season as under Ian Holloway.

6. Arsenal
2014 matches played: 16 (W8, D4, L4)
2014 points: 28
2014 points per game: 1.75

Injuries severely disrupted Arsenal’s season, with the Gunners missing Laurent Koscielny, Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey, Mesut Ozil and Theo Walcott for much of 2014.

The difference upon their return has been massive, and had those players retained fitness the Gunners might still have been challenging for the Premier League title.

Still, a fourth place finish and FA Cup win could still be a decent season for Arsene Wenger and his squad all things considered.

5. Tottenham Hotspur
2014 matches played: 16 (W9, D2, L5)
2014 points: 29
2014 points per game: 1.81

While Tim Sherwood has come in for plenty of criticism for his public castigation of Tottenham Hotspur players, the Spurs boss has still helped rack up a solid tally of points in 2014, and will deserve a chance to manage a decent team elsewhere when he inevitably leaves at the end of the season.

4. Everton
2014 matches played: 16 (W10, D2, L4)
2014 points: 32
2014 points per game: 2

Everton have had a wonderful season under Roberto Martinez, and the superb performance in outplaying Manchester United at Goodison Park yesterday showed the clear improvement made on David Moyes’ Toffees.

3. Manchester City
2014 matches played: 14 (W9, D3, L2)
2014 points: 30
2014 points per game: 2.14

Manchester City looked clear favourites to win the Premier League title just a fortnight ago, but a loss to Liverpool at Anfield halted their charge – as did the subsequent draw with Sunderland.

Manuel Pellegrini’s men are now relying on the teams above them to drop points, and their position certainly feels like a missed opportunity.

2. Chelsea
2014 matches played: 16 (W11, D2, L3)
2014 points: 35
2014 points per game: 2.19

Chelsea have won 35 points in 2014, but that is nine less than the calendar year leaders.

Jose Mourinho’s men have dropped needless points at the likes of Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Sunderland, and if their title charge stalls it is thanks to their own failures.

1. Liverpool
2014 matches played: 16 (W14, D2, L0)
2014 points: 44
2014 points per game: 2.75

Liverpool are the only Premier League team unbeaten in 2014, and after a middling but competitive 2013, the Reds are clear favourites to claim their first title since 1990.
