Louis van Gaal (Netherlands)

The current Netherlands national team boss is currently the joint favourite to be the new Manchester United manager after having recently expressed a desire to end his glittering managerial career by coaching in the Premier League next season after finishing his two-year spell in charge of the Oranje following this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.

The only negative to the appointment of the 62-year-old former Ajax, FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich trainer is that he will not be able to take up the vacant role until Holland exit the tournament in South America, which could be as late as July.

However, the positives for the Red Devils are that they would be hiring one of the most successful club managers in Europe of the past 20 years.

Carlo Ancelotti (Real Madrid)

The Italian is hugely admired by former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who spoke warmly of his rival coach following his unexpected sacking by Chelsea back in 2011, and it is understood that the Red Devils hierarchy are currently monitoring Ancelotti’s present situation at the Santiago Bernabeu with there still some doubts as to his future in the Spanish capital.

In fact, it is widely assumed that were Ancelotti not to win either La Liga or the Uefa Champions League this season, then he will be fired this summer, and so paving the way clear for United to bring the experienced trainer to Old Trafford.

Ryan Giggs (Manchester United)

The Red Devils legend has been placed in temporary charge of the club in the immediate aftermath of Moyes’s sacking and while it is widely given as a formality that the Welshman will one day manage the club, with Giggs having recently been undertaking his Uefa coaching badges, the word coming out of United is that the role has just come too soon for the veteran winger.

Jurgen Klopp (Borussia Dortmund)

Despite United reportedly making the highly rated German their first choice to replace Moyes earlier this week, Klopp has since come out to publicly rule himself out of the running for the position, claiming to be content in his current role in the Ruhr Valley.

However, there must have been some doubts as to whether United would have been that willing to replace Moyes with such a similar manager in Klopp in any case as the club reportedly go in search of the big-name trainer to get them back to where they belong next season.

Diego Simeone (Atletico Madrid)

While the Argentinian is currently one of the most sought-after and highly young trainers in Europe, with Atleti on the verge of a stunning title win in Spain, while they could also qualify for the final of this season’s Uefa Champions League too, it is not thought that United are interested in his services.

And that is because as mentioned above, the Premier League champions hierarchy are only looking to bring in a top-level coach with mountains of experience, while Simeone’s lack of English also counts against him.
