Ten Premier League Transfer Sagas and How We Think They’ll End This Summer

10 deals that have been ‘on the cards’ for some time and our opinion on whether a deal will be struck in the summer transfer window.

Adam Lallana (Southampton to Liverpool)

England international has had an outstanding season and his form will almost certainly lead to a spot in Roy Hodgson’s 2014 World Cup finals squad and may well also see the 25 year old leaving St Mary’s for pastures new.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is certainly interested in the goal-scoring midfielder and may well see the Saints star as a logical long term replacement for Steven Gerrard and Lallana will be tempted by a move to Anfield not least because it would offer the playmaker a chance to strut his stuff in the Champions League.

Chances of deal happening this summer: 8/10

Diego Costa (Atletico Madrid to Chelsea)

Perhaps the worst kept secret in the footballing world, a move for the Brazilian born Spanish international to Chelsea has been discussed for the best part of six months and by all accounts a deal is pretty much already been done, though clearly hasn’t been officially announced by either party.

Chelsea need a striker, Atletico Madrid have a habit of selling their top talents, and there is every chance Jose Mourinho will offer Belgian keeper Thibaut Courtois as part of any deal for Costa, who has scored 36 goals in all competitions this term.

Chances of deal happening this summer: 10/10

Julian Draxler (Schalke to Arsenal)

Young German was close to joining the Gunners in January but the fact that the 20 year old had an ankle injury at the time perhaps scared Arsene Wenger off stumping up the cash needed to sign the attacking midfielder, expect a fresh bid before the 2014 World Cup finals get underway.

Arsenal are set to spend big this summer and one would imagine that the talented Draxler will be high up on their wish-list though one imagines other interested parties will be on hand to drive the price up.

Chances of deal happening this summer: 7/10

William Carvalho (Sporting Lisbon to Man United)

The Portuguese midfielder was clearly a player David Moyes rated, the former Man United manager scouting the tough tackler on a number of occasions, but are the Old Trafford side still keen on the 22 year old enforcer?

Some sources claim that Sporting Lisbon will only sell their prized asset if his £37m release clause is triggered and that’s not a price Man United are likely to fork out for a relatively inexperienced performer so the only real obstacle to a deal is the Primeira Liga side’s demands, which may need to be reduced for any sale to go ahead.

Chances of deal happening this summer: 6/10

Luke Shaw (Southampton to Chelsea)

Teenage left-back is known to be a Blues fan and Chelsea have been chasing the Southampton man for some time and he would appear to be the logical replacement for veteran Ashley Cole.

The chances of a summer move occurring though will depend greatly on how much the Saints demand for the 18 year old, especially as Chelsea appear to be working a little more responsibly in the transfer market at present, no doubt Jose Mourinho is keen to adhere to UEFA’s FFP (Financial Fair Play) guidelines and could opt to keep the cost down by offering players in part-exchange for the England man.

Chances of deal happening this summer: 8/10

Paulinho (Tottenham to Chelsea)

This is a relatively new development but some sources are very confident that Jose Mourinho wants to sign yet another Brazilian though one imagines Tottenham will not so easily sell the midfielder.

Paulinho cost the White Hart Lane side a then club record £17m last summer and any chance the west London side of completing a successful move for the box to box performer will rest on just how much they are willing to offer Spurs.

One does wonder just where Paulinho would fit into Jose Mourinho’s midfield.

Chances of deal happening this summer: 4/10

Edinson Cavani (PSG to Chelsea)

Another big-name linked with a move to join Chelsea but just how likely is it that PSG would sell their record signing after just one season at the Parc des Princes?

The French capital club fought hard to nab the Uruguayan and his top notch return of 25 goals in 42 appearances this season kind of dampens speculation of the 27 year old being ‘unsettled’ and a move to Stamford Bridge seems highly unlikely.

Chances of deal happening this summer: 3/10

Cristian Tello (Barcelona to Liverpool)

Young forward has started just two La Liga fixtures this term and may well see his first team chances further limited if Gerard Deulofeu returns from his Everton spot and into the Nou Camp set-up and therefore a move to Anfield may be a distinct possibility.

Brendan Rodgers has been pursuing the Spanish international for some time and the fact that the Merseyside club are challenging for major honours and have Champions League football to offer Tello may well lead to a successful swoop for the Barcelona man, perhaps initially on a loan deal.

Chances of deal happening this summer: 9/10

Javier Hernandez (Man United to Tottenham)

Chicharito has seen his first team chances greatly limited this term and the 25 year old Mexican is highly likely to leave Old Trafford this summer but is a move to White Hart Lane a possibility?

On paper such a deal makes sense and Spurs certainly need fresh, effective, striking additions but a move to the continent may well better suit Hernandez and one can see a switch to La Liga being far more likely for the talented Man United bit-part player.

Chances of deal happening this summer: 3/10

Mohamed Diame (West Ham to Everton)

The Senegal international apparently has a £3.5m release clause that will surely leave many sides clambering to trigger such a deal so as to pick up a real bargain and a move to Goodison Park seems highly likely.

Toffees boss Roberto Martinez, who worked with Diame during their shared time at Wigan Athletic, could well need to bring in permanent additions to help his side continue their upward progress under the Spaniard, not least to replace the top performers who are at the club on loan, with the Hammers man perhaps the ideal man to replace Man City’s Gareth Barry.
