The Japan international has been a resounding flop since linking up with United in a £12m move from Dortmund two years ago, failing to establish himself as a first team regular under both Sir Alex Ferguson and David Moyes.

Dortmund are believed to be keen on re-signing the 25-year-old, who was named in the Bundesliga Team of the Season in each of Dortmund’s title-winning seasons of 2011 and 2012.

However, the newly crowned Coppa Italia champions are also said to be keen on landing his signature and could decide to offer him the chance of reviving his career in Italy.

Coach Rafa Benitez is believed to be a big fan of his and has identified him as a potential key player ahead of a renewed title challenge.

Kagawa still has two years to run on his deal with United, but he is believed to be available for somewhere in the region of £15m.
