Week 37 of this season’s Premier League served up 28 goals and even more talking points.
Caughtoffside has picked out a host of interesting statistics from each of the weekend’s 10 games.
West Ham United 2-0 Tottenham Hotspur
Younes Kaboul’s dismissal at Upton Park means that the France international has now received four Premier League red cards – more than any other Spurs player.
West Ham had gone 257 minutes without scoring prior to Harry Kane’s own goal.
Stewart Downing completed the victory with his first goal for the Hammers. The winger had not scored in his last 39 league outings since finding the net for former club Liverpool in a 3-2 win over Spurs in March 2013.
Having won 3-0 at White Hart Lane in October, Saturday’s triumph saw West Ham complete their first league double over Spurs since the 1998-99 campaign.
Aston Villa 3-1 Hull City
Ashley Westwood fired Villa ahead after just 57 seconds by notching what was the 1000th Premier League to be scored at Villa Park. 570 of those goals were for the home team.
Westwood’s early opener was the eighth first-minute goal in the Premier League this season. No previous campaign has provided more.
Hull have now failed to beat Villa in their last six league meetings, taking just one point from a possible 18.
Manchester United 0-1 Sunderland
Sunderland’s victory was their first over United in 24 top-flight matches, while it was their first league win at Old Trafford since 1968.
The Red Devils have now lost seven home league games in a season for the first time since the 1973-74 campaign.
Sunderland are currently fifth in the form table after taking 10 points from their last four matches – a run of fixtures that has included trips to Chelsea, Manchester City and United.
Newcastle United 3-0 Cardiff City
Loic Remy scored the 1,000th Premier League goal of the season when he notched his 14th for the Magpies in the 87th minute of Saturday’s game. The total currently stands at 1,009.
Two of Newcastle’s goals, including Steven Taylor’s last-minute strike that crossed the line after hitting him in the face, came from headers. Cardiff have now conceded 15 Premier League goals from headers – more than any other team this season.
Defeat for Cardiff confirmed their relegation to the Championship. 28 newly-promoted sides have now failed to stay in the Premier League in their first season.
Stoke City 4-1 Fulham
Fulham were also relegated on Saturday, ending their 13-year stay in England’s top division.
The Cottagers have conceded 83 top-flight goals so far this season. They are just six short of equalling Derby County’s unwanted Premier League record, which was set in 2008.
Stoke attempted 602 passes against Fulham, which is more than they had made in any of their previous 226 Premier League matches. 552 of those passes were completed, which is also a club record.
The Potters will beat their best ever Premier League points tally if they avoid defeat at West Bromwich Albion next Sunday.
Swansea 0-1 Southampton
Thanks to Rickie Lambert’s stoppage-time winner, Southampton have now scored in 12 of their last 13 away league matches.
Artur Boruc’s clean sheet was the Saints’ 15th Premier League shutout of the season. Only Chelsea – 18 – and Arsenal – 16 – have kept more.
Swansea’s 18th league defeat of the season means that they can finish no higher than 12th, which would be their lowest final position in a Premier League campaign.
Everton 2-3 Manchester City
Man City have now scored 150 goals in all competitions this season. Liverpool – 108 – are the only other Premier League team that has reached triple figures.
City’s victory was just their second win in 16 trips to Everton. The Toffees had won 10 and drawn four of the sides’ 15 previous encounters at Goodison Park.
Leighton Baines provided an excellent cross from which Romelu Lukaku scored his 15th Everton goal in all competitions. Baines has now played a key role in nine Premier League goals this season – scoring five and assisting four. No defender has made a bigger impact offensively.
Arsenal 1-0 West Bromwich Albion
Arsenal secured their fourth consecutive win thanks to Olivier Giroud’s eighth goal in seven games at the Emirates Stadium.
Giroud’s strike also means that West Brom are still yet to keep a Premier League clean sheet against the Gunners. The teams have met 16 times in the modern top flight.
Arsenal have conceded just 11 goals at home in the league this season – their best figures this century.
Chelsea 0-0 Norwich City
Despite having 76 per cent of possession after half time, Chelsea managed to produce just one shot on target in the second half.
Norwich have now been involved in five goalless draws in the Premier League this season, only West Ham – 7 – have featured in more. Chelsea have had four top-flight 0-0s this term.
Referee Neil Swarbrick turned down a strong penalty appeal from Norwich early in the game when Martin Olsson went down under pressure from Ashley Cole. Chelsea have conceded just one spot kick in their last 45 league matches at Stamford Bridge.
Crystal Palace 3-3 Liverpool
Liverpool threw away a three-goal lead in the Premier League for the first time since their 3-3 draw at Southampton in August 2000.
Joe Allen broke the deadlock at Selhurst Park with his first league goal in 737 days.
Allen’s effort was the first headed goal that Palace have conceded in the league since Tony Pulis became manager in November.
