Ashley Cole (Chelsea)

If it is an experienced international that the Red Devils are hoping to sign to replace the departing Evra at the Theatre of Dreams when the summer transfer window does finally reopen for business, then they will be hard pressed to find a better alternative than the west London club’s former England international.

Cole announced his decision to retire from international football on Sunday night after being told of his exclusion from the England squad for this summer’s World Cup in Brazil and is now also expected to be released by the Blues after eight years of loyal service at Stamford Bridge.

And so United could do far worse than luring the 33-year-old north on a free contract for next season.

Alberto Moreno (Sevilla)

Before his sudden dismissal as United head coach last month, former boss David Moyes had been bust running his eye over the highly rated youngster who has lit up La Liga this season with his rapid raids down Sevilla’s left flank.

However, the problem for United is that they are not the only team on the Continent to have scouted the 21-year-old this season, especially after his recent debut for the world and European champions Spain, while the player is also likely to cost upwards of £20m too, which may scare the Premier League giants off.

Fabio Coentrao (Real Madrid)

Again, another left back who previous coach Moyes was targeting, with the Scot coming very close to actually luring the 26-year-old to the Theatre of Dreams in the final hours of transfer deadline day last summer, only for the proposed season-long loan deal for the left back to collapse at the very last minute when the Red Devils failed to get thee required paperwork filed in time.

However, with the Portugakl international still expected to leave the Santiago Bernabue come the end of the campaign after having been made surplus to requirements by new Los Blancos boss Carlo Ancelotti for most of this season, then United should have few problems being able to persuade the full back to move to the north west next season to replace Evra.

Luke Shaw (Southampton)

According to various reports in the English press on Monday morning, United have made the first moves in their efforts to sign the newly capped England international by lodging a big-money bid with the Saints for the 18-year-old.

However, the Red Devils are not the only Premier League giant known to be currently interested in the player, with both rivals Chelsea and Manchester City having also sent scouts to St Mary’s of late to run their eye over Shaw, so it is far from a done deal that Shaw will be at Old Trafford next season just yet.

Felipe Luis (Atletico Madrid)

A far cheaper alternative to the likes of starlets such as Shaw and Moreno would be to make a move for Atleti’s consistent and ever-reliable Brazil international, a left back who has shone for Diego Simeone’s high-flying Liga outfit in this campaign.

But again, United would need to act fast in order to secure the 28-year-old’s services for next season with Premier League rivals Chelsea also known to be keen on the full back who will be lining up on the left-hand side of the host nation’s back four at this summer’s World Cup.
