The Relegated Stars Who Would Be Perfect For Premier League Sides Including Chelsea And Liverpool Targets

With three clubs down the raid will start.

With the 2013/14 Premier League season having come to a close, Cardiff City, Fulham and Norwich City were the three confirmed teams relegated to the Championship.

This is of course a huge disappointment to the trio of clubs, but could represent a great opportunity for the remaining sides in the English top flight to swoop in and poach their best players.

Here are the 10 that are most likely to be touted.

Steven Caulker, Cardiff City

Joined the Bluebirds from Tottenham Hotspur last summer for £8m, but had a clause written into his contract specifying he could leave if the Welsh team were relegated.

At 22 years-old and having been one of Cardiff’s better players in a poor campaign, both Spurs and Liverpool have been linked with the centre-back.

Ashkan Dejagh, Fulham

Of the three teams that went down it probably hit the Cottagers the hardest having spent 13 years in the division and having supposedly the strongest squad of the trio at their disposal.

Whilst many of their stars have been underwhelming, Dejagh impressed and will have another chance to showcase himself when he plays for Iran at the 2014 World Cup.

Leroy Fer, Norwich City

Linked with Everton in January 2013 the move fell through due to recurring knee problems for the Dutchman and in the end Norwich made the plunge with a £4m transfer six months later.

Fer has managed to avoid injury in a physically imposing setup in England and as a Netherlands international and a fine box-to-box midfielder, the Toffees could well be tempted once again.

David Marshall, Cardiff City

Many were annoyed that Marshall wasn’t named in the PFA Team of the Year because as poor as Cardiff’s defensive record was, it would have been a whole lot worse without this Scot.

The goalkeeper was consistent all term and at 29 years-old Marshall still has a number of years at the top left in him.

Gary Medel, Cardiff City

Hardly showered himself in glory this year after becoming Cardiff’s most expensive ever player at £11m, but like Caulker has a release clause following relegation.

Medel is a battler in central midfield who could bring some grit and physicality to a side.

Konstantinos Mitroglou, Fulham

Another club record signing here and at £12m and with just three appearances for the west Londoners to his name, could turn out to be a more expensive flop than the infamous Steve Marlet.

That is less to do with Mitroglou’s talent and more to do with injury problems however, as with Olympiakos previously the striker had been impressing and even netted a Champions League hat-trick earlier in the season.

Nathan Redmond, Norwich City

Signed from Birmingham City for £2m last summer as one of a number of big signings, the young winger has perhaps not impressed as much as many would have wanted at Carrow Road.

That being said Redmond clearly possesses talent and at 20 years-old could well be worth the gamble.

John Ruddy, Norwich City

Like Marshall this Englishman has impressed as the last line of defence behind an often shaky back four and is probably too good for the second tier.

Ruddy is still just 27 years-old and having been linked with Chelsea less than 12 months ago clearly has something about him.

Robert Snodgrass, Norwich City

There are few better set piece takers in the whole of the Premier League and what the Scotland international lacks in pace he makes up for with precise passing.

Now 26  years-old Snodgrass is unlikely to be breaking into a Champions League team, but could be a leading star for a number of top flight English sides.

Maarten Stekelenburg, Fulham

Despite having been the Netherlands No.1 this ‘keeper has endured a poor campaign with Fulham after a move from AS Roma last summer.

David Stockdale has largely been preferred to Stekelenburg, but with international and European experience there is still much to promote the Dutchman.
