GK: Lukasz Fabianski – 7

Could do nothing at all for either of the Tigers’ opening two goals inside the first eight minutes, although the Poland international very nearly gifted Hull a late equaliser with just minutes remaining in extra time after a mad rush from his area.

RB: Bacary Sagna – 8

Steady and dependable as ever from the France right back in what was reportedly his final-ever appearance for the Gunners, with the underdogs enjoying precious little joy down their left flank for the entire two hours.

CB: Per Mertesacker – 6

An unusually hesitant performance at the back by the lanky Germany international, with the experienced centre back nowhere to be seen as the Tigers took a stunning 2-0 lead early on from set pieces.

CB: Laurent Koscielny – 8

The impressive Frenchman was in the right place at exactly the right time, showing the instincts of a season front man, to turn home a knock-down and bring Arsenal level in the match at 2-2 with less than 20 minutes remaining in what an excellent all-round display by the central defender.

LB: Kieran Gibbs – 7

Struggled early on as Steve Bruce’s men made an electric start to proceedings, before the youngster gradually made his way into the match, becoming more progressive in his game as the north Londoners gradually took control, although he did miss horribly from close range with the match still in the balance before the end of normal time.

However, perhaps his most important contribution was his headed clearance off the line to prevent Alex Bruce making it 3-0 with barely a quarter of an hour gone in the game.

CM: Mikel Arteta – 6

Not for the first time in recent months, the game appeared to pass the cultured Basque by at times, with its pace and intensity appearing to be too much for the holding midfielder, although he did begin to exert more control in the second half.

AM: Aaron Ramsey – 9 MOM

The Wales international has been in excellent form since returning from his three-month layoff with a calf injury, and the goalscoring midfielder capped off yet another brilliant showing by scoring Arsenal’s winner with a world-class finish in the second period of extra time.

AM: Mesut Ozil – 7

The classy German was neat and tidy, as always, throughout the contest until hooked by Arsenal head coach Arsene Wenger at the break in extra time when fresh legs in the form of Jack Wilshere were more the order of the day.

FW: Santi Cazorla – 8

Netted the north London club’s crucial first goal just nine minutes after Curtis Davies had given the Tigers a shock 2-0 lead, and was generally a menace to the Hull defence during most of the game until replaced by Tomas Rosicky for the final quarter of an hour.

FW: Lukas Podolski – 6

The experienced Germany international had a disappointing match, with it being no surprise at all that he was substituted for striker Yaya Sanogo just past the hour-mark.

ST: Olivier Giroud – 8

The lone forward worked tirelessly throughout, with the Frenchman unlucky not to score when his header hit the bar, but he did play a key role in Arsenal’s winner after brilliantly back-heeling the ball into Ramsey’s path.

SUB: Yaya Sanogo – 7

Replaced the ineffective Podolski with half an hour remaining as Wenger went in search of an equaliser, and managed to at least keep the Tigers back line occupied, without ever truly convincing alongside Giroud up front.

SUB: Tomas Rosicky – 7

Again, a lively presence in attack when introduced by Wenger for the second half of extra time, with the experienced Czech Republic international very nearly creating a fourth for the Gunners with one of the last kicks of the match.

SUB: Jack Wilshere – 7

The young English playmaker, who is just back from his latest injury setback, took over from the tiring Ozil at the break in extra time, and then crucially managed to maintain possession of ball well for his team thereafter to close the match out.
