Liverpool’s Daniel Agger is edging closer to a move away from Anfield, where he joined from Brondby eight and a half years ago. Towards the end of last season, his manager Brendan Rodgers preferred young Mamadou Sakho than the Dane, and Agger has spoken out against the manager for doing so…

“It definitely wasn’t great to be left out, but I don’t make the decisions. I think it is because the manager doesn’t think that I’m good enough,”, said the 29-year-old.

Many Liverpoool fans will be sad to see the Dane go, but might cheer up if their side manage to secure on of these five potential replacements.

Dejan Lovren

Southampton’s Croatian is being heavily rated as Liverpool’s priority central defensive target. At 24-years-old, he’s yet to reach his peak, but already showed during his debut year with the Saints that he’s more than good enough to perform in the Premier League. if Liverpool can get him for the rumoured £8m fee, they’ll be getting a real bargain.

Tiago Ilori

Instead of buying someone new, Rodgers could finally give a chance to the young Portuguese he signed for a sizeable fee last summer. Ilori hasn’t been given a single minute of first-team football yet with the Reds, but seriously impressed on loan at Granada in La Liga during the second half of the season. Surely, after a full pre-season, Ilori will be ready to challenge for a starting spot?

Kyriakos Papadopoulos

Liverpool badly wanted the young Greek last summer, but his injury problems meant they opted for Sakho instead. Papadopoulos is tenacious, and even has the technical ability on the ball play as anchoring midfielder. His discipline is a problem at the moment, but that will likely improve as he matures. He’s been linked in recent weeks, although will likely have to prove his fitness before he earns a move to England.

Jerome Boateng

The Reds will do exceptionally well to convince Bayern to sell on of Europe’s premier defenders. Boateng is likely to start for Germany at this summer’s World Cup, following another Bundesliga winning campaign with Bayern Munich. but we see no reason as to why Pep Guardiola would even consider parting with the former Sky Blue.

Steven Caulker

A cheap and very available option, Caulker was one of the shining lights of his side’s miserable debut Premier League season. He’s a full England international, and at just 22-years-old, has the potential to challenge Mamadou Sakho and Martin Skrtel for starting spots.
