Five In And Five Out For Tottenham In The Summer Including The Sale Of Lloris And Buying Chelsea Ace

The transfers in and out of White Hart Lane in the close season.

It has been an odd season for Tottenham Hotspur in 2013/14, with things starting brightly with over £110m being spent on new players, before two managers were sacked.

The disappointment of the world record £85.3m transfer of Gareth Bale to Real Madrid seemed to have been dampened by the arrival of the likes of Erik Lamela, Paulinho and Roberto Soldado.

However, results were poor early on and in the end it cost Andre Villas-Boas his job as boss in December 2013, replaced by former Spurs midfielder Tim Sherwood.

Yet Sherwood also rubbed chairman Daniel Levy up the wrong way and went the same way as AVB once the campaign was concluded, which means whoever takes over has a task on their hands.

Changes to the squad are expected this summer and here are five transfers in and five out of White Hart Lane.

Players out

Heurelho Gomes

After six years with the club the inconsistent but popular goalkeeper will not be offered a new contract and therefore is definitely leaving Spurs in 2014.

Getting the Brazilian off the wage bill can only be a good things as Gomes has fallen to third in the pecking order for the Lily Whites.

Hugo Lloris

Arguably the best stopper in the Premier League, Lloris is someone who could comfortably be playing Champions League football and with Paris Saint-German showing interest, the 27-year-old could be tempted.

As captain of the France national team the ‘keeper is a strong presence and the north Londoners would certainly miss him.

Kyle Naughton

This campaign has proven that unlike his namesake and former Sheffield United teammate Kyle Walker, Naughton is not good enough for Tottenham and has openly admitted he could leave.

Naughton’s versatility to be able to play as either as a right or left-back means that there should be some potential suitors.

Sandro

The Sherwood era really took its toll on this fans’ favourite as the Brazilian found himself isolated by the manager and is looking to leave as a result.

Sandro is said to be looking to Serie A as his next destination and both AS Roma and Napoli have taken note of these latest developments.

Jan Vertonghen

Like Lloris this centre-back was prepared to give Spurs a chance this season, but their failure to qualify for the Champions League once again has made Vertonghen consider his options.

Injuries hampered the Belgium international in 2013/14, but having made the PFA Team of the Year the previous term the quality of the 27-year-old is evident.

Players in

Steven Caulker, Cardiff City

Less than 12 months ago the north London side sanctioned Caulker’s departure to Cardiff in an £8m deal, but a year on and they’re considering taking the Englishman back.

Still only 22-years-old the Bluebirds captain may not have had the best of seasons in the Welsh capital, but is considered a step up to Michael Dawson and Younes Kaboul.

Ben Foster, West Bromwich Albion

With Gomes certainly leaving and Lloris looking like he may follow suit, a new ‘keeper would be a priority for Tottenham in the transfer market.

Foster has impressed in a relatively average West Brom side and has bags of experience in the English top flight.

Max Kruse, Borussia Monchengladbach

It’s been a fine year for Gladbach in the Bundesliga in which they qualified for the Europa League and as a result several of their best players have attracted the interest of bigger sides.

Goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen has already joined Barcelona and with 12 league goals and nine assists Kruse could be following the stopper out of the club.

Romelu Lukaku, Chelsea

With Soldado failing to perform, Jermain Defoe having been sold and Emmanuel Adebayor known as an inconsistent figure, a new striker is likely to be a priority for whoever takes over in the dugout.

Having impressed over the past two years with West Brom and Everton during loan spells, the 21-year-old Lukaku is a proven goalscorer in the English top tier and Jose Mourinho could be convinced to sell.

Alexandru Maxim, Stuttgart

Back to Germany and this Romanian could provide the creativity and flair in attacking midfield that has been lacking from much of the current players at the Lane.

Christian Eriksen apart, more is needed in the final third – particularly from the wings – and with the ability to play as a No.10 or on the left, Maxim could well provide that.
