Liverpool finished second in the Premier League title race last season, but are continually being linked with a batch of new stars to go that one better next season.

In order to generate some funds and also clear squad space, they’re likely to sell a load of the current setup as well, and here’s seven in and seven out – in what would hypothetically be a perfect transfer window at Anfield.

IN:

Marcus Rojo – Benfica

The Argentine is naturally a central defender, but plays at left-back for his country. In this respect, he would cover two problem positions for the Reds, who conceded 50 top flight goals last term. Rojo was superb in Portugal last season, and Rodgers is interested as a result. – although he’ll have to fight off interest from Monaco to sign him.

OUT:

Daniel Agger

The stalwart central defender is unhappy at Anfield after dropping down the pecking order last term, and has criticised the manager in the press as well. Never a clever move for a player who wants to stay at a club…

IN:

Alberto Moreno – Sevilla

The Reds have already made a £16m bid plus Suso on loan for the 21-year-old Spaniard – and while Sevilla have yet to accept, Moreno is definitely the man Rodgers wants to solve his problem left-back position.

OUT:

Aly Cissokho

The Frenchman’s loan deal will not be made permanent after a miserable season in England. His passing, was quite simply, atrocious.

IN:

Emre Can – Bayer Leverkusen

Liverpool have lodged a £10m bid for the uber-talented German Under-21 anchorman. He will provide a rotation option for Steven Gerrard, who has just turned 34, at the base of the midfield. More talks are set to take place between the two sides this weekend.

OUT:

Pepe Reina

Liverpool will likely sell their former first-choice keeper permanently this summer. His transfer fee will be used to strengthen other areas of the squad.

IN:

Adam Lallana – Southampton

The Reds have already had a £20m bid for Southampton’s skipper and England midfielder rejected. Lallana would inject technical ability and a creative spark to the Liverpool side, along with a genuine goal threat. He also provides a central midfield option, as part of a three, or he can be deployed on the left. He’d be a superb signing for the Reds, although his price tag might be inflated – with the Saints potentially holding out for closer to £30m.

OUT:

Victor Moses

Like Cissokho, Moses did nowhere near enough during his loan from Chelsea to convince Liverpool into signing him permanently this summer.

IN:

Xherdan Shaqiri

Bayern’s young Swiss star doesn’t get the game time his undisputed talent deserves at the Allianz Arena, and he’s openly said he’ll consider a move to the Premier League. Shaqiri will offer a genuine wide option to support Raheem Sterling, but he also provides an option more centrally – and Rodgers will appreciate his versatility – as well as his pace and power.

OUT:

Suso

The young Spaniard did well on loan at Almeria, but rumours have circulated about his attitude problems, and he could well be used as a makeweight in the deal that brings Moreno to Anfield.

IN:

Rickie Lambert – Southampton

Of all the players on this list, the deal which is closest to being completed is the £4m one for the England international striker. Lambert registered doubel figures for both goals and assists last term – and Rodgers wants to sign him to act as cover for his brilliant front two Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge.

OUT:

Iago Aspas

Last summer’s Spanish signing completely flopped. He failed to score a Premier League goal, and even if Liverpool fans think Lambert’s price is inflated, they’d happily rather have the Englishman on the bench than Aspas. Expect the forward to be shipped back to his homeland.
