Five Players Tottenham Boss Mauricio Pochettino Should Sign to Secure Champions League Berth Including Arsenal Transfer Target

Who the new manager needs to be trying to recruit over the summer.

On Tuesday Mauricio Pochettino was named as the new Tottenham Hotspur manager, joining from Southampton and succeeding Tim Sherwood at the club.

Whilst the Argentine has been a largely popular appointment among the fans, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will have high expectations for the 42-year-old.

The most likely target for Pochettino will be to guide Tottenham to Champions League qualification and with strong competition in the Premier League that is an extremely difficult task.

So here are five players the former Saints boss should sign in order to ensure that happens.

Daley Blind, Ajax

One of the biggest problems for the north London outfit in 2013/14 was at left-back, where Danny Rose was generally struggling for either form or fitness.

It seems the future of the position does not lie with Rose and with only Zeki Fryers as backup more support is needed and Blind is the ideal choice with plenty of Champions League and international experience.

Nathaniel Clyne, Southampton

Although it’s not as much of a concern as on the left, there are still concerns over the capabilities of both Kyle Walker and Kyle Naughton at right-back.

The latter has admitted he could well leave the club this summer, whilst the purchase of Clyne – a defender Pochettino knows well having worked with him for 16 months – would provide great competition for Walker.

Matthia Destro, AS Roma

Attacking midfield isn’t a priority for the manager due to the amount of expensive talent already available in the position, but Destro’s versatility makes him a likely purhcase.

The Italy international can operate as a striker or on the wings and after an impressive last campaign with Roma could well be worth the £14m being touted for the 23-year-old.

Romelu Lukaku, Chelsea

Other than the full-backs the next area that is most desperate for improvement is in attack, where there are limited options and also a lack of form.

As good as Emmanuel Adebayor was in the latter half of the season the Togo international is still far from consistent and Lukaku could be the ideal striker for reinforcement – having scored 32 league goals in the past two years.

Loic Remy, QPR

Another forward here and someone else who impressed over the previous 12 months during a loan spell in the English top flight, netting 14 times for Newcastle United.

Remy is also available for the relatively cheap price of £8m due to a release clause written into the 27-year-old’s contract, although Spurs face competition from north London rivals Arsenal.
