Five Youngsters That Could Be Surprise Stars Of The World Cup, Including Chelsea Defender and Playmaker

Manchester United target also featured, along with Mexico, Colombia and Brazil youths.

The World Cup is the ultimate stage for any footballer.

Every four years, the best players on the planet get the chance to shine in front of a huge global audience.

Each World Cup also sees some surprise stars emerge – players that were relatively unheard of until they rocked their skills on the grandest stage of all.

In 1998, 20-year-old Thierry Henry – then a left winger at AS Monaco – grabbed the world’s attention by scoring three goals in six games.  A teenage Michael Owen also made quite an impression on that tournament.

Here at CaughtOffside, we have listed five youngsters that we think could shine in Brazil this summer.

Memphis Depay – Holland

PSV left winger Depay, 20, only has four senior caps to his name, but he could have a big impact in Brazil.

His rapid pace, brilliant dribbling skills and eye for goal have seen him compared to Bayern Munich star Arjen Robben.

Depay is reportedly keen to follow Holland boss Louis van Gaal to Manchester United this summer. Exiting news for Red Devils fans!

Kenneth Omeruo – Nigeria

Despite being on the books of Chelsea for over two years, Omeruo has yet to make a single first-team appearance for the Blues.

However, the 20-year-old, who impressed during a five-month loan at Middlesbrough this season, already has 16 senior international caps under his belt.

He recently signed a new contract that ties him to Chelsea until 2018 and he could be the Stamford Bridge club’s long-term replacement for John Terry.

Diego Reyes – Mexico

Tall centre-back Reyes, who can also play in midfield, was part of Mexico’s Under-23 side that won gold at the Olympic Games two years ago.

His impressive displays at London 2012 convinced Porto to sign him from Club America.

The 21-year-old was used sparingly by his club this season, but the World Cup is his chance to shine once more.

Juan Fernando Quintero – Colombia

Like Reyes, Quintero has found himself on the fringes at Porto this season, but he has bags of talent and even more potential.

The diminutive 21-year-old is excellent at long shots and has the ability to provide deadly accurate crosses for Colombia’s strikers.

He is unlikely to move from Porto this summer, but, if he gets to chance to show the world his skills, he could well be in high demand.

Bernard – Brazil

At 21, Shakhtar Donetsk forward Bernard is the youngest member of Brazil’s World Cup squad.

His inclusion came at the expense of Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho and national hero Kaka.

Bernard, who only started seven league games in Ukraine this season, is likely to be used predominantly as a sub by Brazil. If given the opportunity, he could be an excellent impact player.
