The Catalan giants have reportedly identified him as the ideal replacement for Cesc Fabregas, who they are allowing to move on during the transfer window.

However, Chelsea are hoping to block their path to the international star as manager Jose Mourinho look to further strengthen his side ahead of the new campaign.

The 22-year-old Spain international has been at Atletico all his career and played a key role this season as Diego Simeone’s side clinched the Primera Liga title and reached the Champions League final.

The Madrid-born star recently agreed an extension with Atleti back in January, that ties him to the club until 2018, and has hinted that he is not looking for a move following links to fellow Premier League giants Manchester United earlier in the season.

“I still haven’t had time to read what has come out. I am on holiday and I plan to disconnect,” he said.

“Barcelona is one of the best teams in the world and that they are interested in you means that you must be doing something right. That is very nice for a footballer.

“In any case, I only think about keeping working. I want to stay here and everyone knows it. I see myself at Atletico next season.”
