Liverpool are still in discussions to bring Sevilla’s 21-year-old Spanish left-back Alberto Moreno to Anfield, but the La Liga club’s president claims a deal is far from being finalised.

If the Reds cannot conclude a deal, they will still need to sign a new left-back this summer, with Brendan Rodgers keen to rectify the problem position as soon as possible.

Here’s five players they could or should go after instead…

5) Ricardo Rodriguez – Wolfsburg

The 21-year-old Swiss star is rated by many as the most talented young left-back in the whole of Europe. He provided Wolfsburg with a consistently barnstorming presence up the left flank last term, assisting nine goals and scoring five himself too. Naturally, his club are desperate for him to sign a new contract – but the appeal of Champions League football could lure him to England.

4) Ryan Bertrand – Chelsea

As harsh as it sounds, this signing will almost universally disappoint Liverpool fans. Bertrand did OK on loan as Aston Villa last term, but did nothing to really suggest he’s capable of doing a job for a top four club next season. The Reds have been linked with his services though, but fans will be hoping it’s very much as a backup option.

3) Ashley Cole – Unattached

Cole is available on a free transfer from Chelsea, and it seems a no-brainer that Liverpool should try to sign the former England international, who racked up over 100 caps for his country. He’s defensively uncompromising, which with Liverpool’s below-par defensive record last term, will be much appreciated at Anfield. A host of clubs, including Real Madrid and Monaco are also monitoring his situation, however.

2) Guilherme Siquiera – Granada

Atletico Madrid have just had an offer accepted for the Brazilian of around £8m, but if Liverpool move quickly enough, they could join the race for the player they almost snapped up last summer. Siquiera is technically superb on the ball, and has a delicious left-footed delivery as well.

1) Marcos Rojo – Sporting Lisbon

Liverpool face competition from PSG, Arsenal and Monaco for the Argentine international, but putting all their effort into securing him could be worth it. The 24-year-old can play at left-back or central defence, meaning he’d provide a top notch option for two problem positions in Liverpool’s team.
