The good people at Manchester Evening News compiled an online survey recently in which fans of the Red Devils voted to choose the players, including new signings, they hoped would be starting at Old Trafford next term.

Interestingly, five new signings make the side, but the country’s highest paid player, Wayne Rooney, is nowhere to be seen…

GK) David de Gea

United fans have no problem with their current no.1 stopper. The Spaniard is one of the best in the Premier League already, and at 23-years-old, he’s only likely to get even better. Expect him to start between the sticks at Old Trafford for much of the next decade at least.

DR) Rafael

The Brazilian was dodgy at times last term, but is unquestionably talented. If he can improve his discipline and defensive positioning, his feistiness down the right could be a real asset like it was under Sir Alex.

DC) Mats Hummels

United fans want Borussia’s brilliant towering central defender to come in and fill the void left by the departing Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic. They’ll have some job persuading him to sign, however.

DC) Phil Jones

Sir Alex Ferguson once claimed that Jones had the potential to become United’s greatest ever player. While we wholeheartedly disagree with this, Red Revils fans clearly think the young Englishman deserves a prolonged chance in his favoured position.

DL) Luke Shaw

The teenager looks likely to complete a multi-million pound move to Old Trafford this summer, where he would compete with veteran Patrice Evra for the starting spot.

MC) Kevin Strootman

Louis van Gaal has worked with Strootman in the Dutch national side, and rates his combative, physical presence in the middle. United could make an offer to Roma that would see the two link up once again, but could wait until January after he proves his fitness following lengthy knee problems.

MC) Koke

Koke is phenomenally talented, but for this reason, Barcelona and Chelsea are also chasing the 22-year-old creative midfielder. If he did arrive though, he could offer guile and class to the centre of the park.

AMR) Marco Reus

This one’s maybe a bit ambitious from the voters. Although Reus would undoubtedly command a place in the side ie he moved to Old Trafford, he recently declared that his future is in Germany with Dortmund.

AMC) Juan Mata

Fans reckon the £37m January signing deserves the pivotal no.10 role his talent cries out for. The Spaniard started finding his feet at Old Trafford towards the end of last season, and he’ll hope to hit the ground running at the start of next.

AML) Adnan Januzaj

United supporters want their Belgian wonderkid to be made a starter next season under LVG. Januzaj shot to prominence last season from relative obscurity – and has all the talent to eventually develop into one of the league’s most devastating attackers.

FC) Robin van Persie

The two-time Premier League Golden Boot winner struggled with injuries last term, but his pedigree is simply undeniable. The poll claims United fans would prefer the Dutchman to spearhead the side than Wayne Rooney.
