It looks to all the world like Liverpool will wrap up the signing of Bayer Leverkusen’s young midfielder Emre Can, with the transfer virtually completed bar confirmation.

However, with the Reds having qualified for the Champions League next term, and seemingly with money to spend, many fans believed the club should have targeted some more high profile targets instead.

Here’s five names who could have got fans a bit more excited…

5) Javi Martinez – Bayern Munich

One of the best holding midfielders in world football, Martinez is also comfortable at centre-back, and is heading to this summer’s World Cup with Spain. There were rumours earlier this summer that the 25-year-old was disenchanted at Bayern Munich, and Liverpool should perhaps have taken advantage. Not only is Martinez physically exceptionally, but he’s exquisite technically as well.

4) Yann M’Vila – Rubin Kazan

M’vila is only 23-years-old, but has already won over 20 caps for the French national side, which shows his undeniable pedigree. He’d no doubt be keen on moving to the world’s most exciting league as well, as he currently plays in Russia. The midfield battler is incredibly strong, and has the physique to adapt to English football quickly.

3) Mohamed Diame – West Ham

Diame is available for £3.5m, which is a serious steal. The African works immensely hard, and can play in a variety of midfield positions as well. He’s best when he’s driving through the centre of the park, and this combative style would undoubtedly benefit Liverpool from the bench.

2) Morgan Schneiderlin – Southampton

The Frenchman made the standby list for Didier Deschamps’ World Cup squad, after his excellent season with the Saints. He’s proven himself in the Premier League, unlike Can, and is far more experienced as well. The battler would add dynamism to Brendan Rodgers’ midfield, and aid Jordan Henderson, who presses relentlessly.

1) Milan Badelj – Hamburg

Badelj enjoyed an exceptional season in Germany with HSV, dominating the centre of the park week in week out. He can tackle, pass and create, as his three assists from last season proves. The Croat is also 25-years-old, meaning he’s coming into his prime as well, and would add the assertiveness to the midfield that Can arguably lacks at present.
