Chelsea have narrowed their centre-back shortlist to three names with the transfer window set to officially open in 20 days’ time.
Premier League heavyweights Chelsea are keen to add a world-class defender to their ranks this season, after bidding adieu to Brazilian David Luiz. Reports in The Daily Express reveal that the club may try landing one of these three gems before the start of the 2014/15 season.
The Blues currently have Gary Cahill and John Terry as the only natural central defenders in the team right now, with Branislav Ivanovic capable of adjusting in a makeshift role. However, an injury to any one of them could leave the west Londoners in a spot of bother. New signing Kurt Zouma could provide cover, but he lacks experience at the highest level…

3) Raphael Varane – Real Madrid
First up is Real’s phenomenal young Frenchman Raphael Varane. The 21-year-old recently won a Champions League medal with his club, and is part of Real Madrid’s World Cup squad this summer too. Varane is composed with the ball at his feet, and mature beyond his years. Carlo Ancelotti’s side will no doubt be desperate to keep hold of him, however.
2) Mehdi Benatia – AS Roma
Benatia excelled in Serie A last term, helping his club finish the season with one of the best defensive records in Europe. He contributed six goals, but is more valued for his tackling and intensity at the back. At 27-years-old, the Moroccan is entering his peak too – but wouldn’t come cheap.
1) Eliaquim Mangala – FC Porto
Mangaha has been consistently linked to Premier League giants such as Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea themselves four a year now, and it looks almost certain that he’ll move to England this summer following his World Cup campaign with France. Mangala is physically superb, and can bully attackers thanks to his speed and strength at the back.
