Premier League giants chase Ligue 1 star.
Arsenal and Manchester United look set to go head-to-head in the battle to sign highly-rated Montpellier attacking midfielder Remy Cabella, CaughtOffside understands.
The 24-year-old, who was a late inclusion in France’s World Cup squad after an injury to Bayern Munich star Franck Ribery, has been one of the top attacking players in Ligue 1 for some time now, and impressed greatly this season with 14 goals and five assists in the French top flight.
Cabella also formed part of the Montpellier squad that earned a shock title win back in the 2011/12 season, but with the club’s fortunes going somewhat downhill since then, it is thought that he is likely to make the move to a bigger club in this summer’s transfer window.
Newcastle United emerged as surprise contenders to sign the player back in January as they sought a replacement for Paris Saint-Germain-bound Yohan Cabaye, though a move never materialised, and it now looks as though Arsenal and United will be the main contenders to snap him up before next season.
Both clubs are known to be in the market for new wide-players this summer due to a shortage of quality options in that position, and Cabella could be a potential bargain as it is thought he could be allowed to move for between £15-20m.
Arsene Wenger is known for keeping an eye on the best up-and-coming talent from his native France, and seemingly feels Cabella could add something to his squad as he looks to bring in another genuine winger to provide an alternative to the injury-prone Theo Walcott, who missed the vast majority of the 2013/14 season.
Other attacking players at the Emirates Stadium, such as Santi Cazorla and Mesut Ozil, have operated out wide but tend to drift centrally to try and link the play, while Cabella could provide Wenger with a more direct option in that position.
United, meanwhile, are keen to improve on the likes of Nani, Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young, all of whom have been highly disappointing for the last couple of seasons and who look unlikely to survive the chop by new manager Louis van Gaal.
Bayern Munich and Holland star Arjen Robben had been linked as an option for van Gaal in that position, but with the German champions looking unlikely to sell such a key player, United have show shifted their interest to the more realistic option of Cabella, though they will face strong competition from Arsenal in the race for his signature.
