Five In, Five Out: Man United Target German Trio Whilst Midfield Flop Heads for Old Trafford Exit

Incoming boss Louis van Gaal looks set for a busy summer of transfer activity.

IN

Mats Hummels (Borussia Dortmund)

The Westfalenstadion rock is the right man to bring in to fill the void left by exiting veterans Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand and the German international may think the time is right for a fresh challenge.

Helped Jurgen Klopp’s side to back to back titles but over the past couple of seasons has seen his side slip further and further off the pace and watching top scorer Robert Lewandowski move to arch rivals Bayern Munich may prove the last straw for the 25 year old centre-back.

Bastian Schweinsteiger (Bayern Munich)

The German midfielder is apparently available this summer as Pep Guardiola looks to re-shuffle his pack and if that is the case then surely a number of Europe’s ‘Elite’ will be beating a path to his door.

Schweinsteiger has near on 500 appearances under his belt and over 100 national team caps, but is still yet to turn 30 so certainly has a lot left in the tank.

Signing such a hugely talented star turn would certainly be a statement of intent from a side looking to repair their reputation following a disastrous season under David Moyes.

Thomas Muller (Bayern Munich)

Louis van Gaal has his sights set on the talented German international who’s career he helped to shape during his spell in charge of the Allianz Arena.

The lanky forward make look clumsy when on the ball but there is no denying the 24 year old’s pedigree. Has 99 goals to his name since breaking into the Bayern Munich side during van Gaal’s spell at the Bavarian club and has helped the side to three Bundesliga titles and three Champions League finals to boot.

Luke Shaw (Southampton)

All but certain to leave St Mary’s and has apparently already agreed terms on a lucrative Man United contract that would make the England man the best paid teenager in world football.

The ideal long term replacement for French veteran Patrice Evra, but won’t come cheap with chief executive Ed Woodward trying to keep the cost down to less than £30m.

Kevin Strootman (AS Roma)

Another central midfield target, clearly Louis van Gaal has worked out that this area of his Old Trafford squad is in much need of repair.

The 24 year old Dutchman may be injured at present but he is certainly a player well worth tracking and could be the right man to offer Man United a strong tigerish presence at the centre of the park whilst also capable of making things happen in the final third.

OUT

Marouane Fellaini

Belgian has proved an expensive failure, partially down to being used in an unfamiliar role, and Louis van Gaal would do well to nip this situation in the bud early on this summer.

There is talk of the Old Trafford side willing to sell the former Everton man for less than half the £27.5m they paid for him, this is a wise move by the club.

Tom Cleverley

It’s questionable what the England man offers Man United. Not an accomplished enough tackler to be considered a good defensive midfielder. A poor distributor of the ball and not a threat in the opposition half, very much a ‘Jack of all trades but master of none’ and a player Louis van Gaal will surely have little use for.

Ashley Young

Winger is way off his game and has arguably never come close to the good form he showed at Aston Villa and made him a solid regular for club and country.

Now more famed for his diving than his ability to threaten defences, time Man United cashed in on the 29 year old while they still can.

Shinji Kagawa

Yes he was at times used out of position by David Moyes but that’s not an excuse that entirely rules out the Japanese international’s poor inconsistent form last term.

On his day the former Borussia Dortmund man can unlock defences but has arguably only proven this on a handful of occasions in two seasons in England.

Javier Hernandez

The Mexican falls into the category of certainly being good enough during his time at the club but is now surely ready to call it quits after four seasons trying to persuade successive manager of his worth.

A move away from Old Trafford may be best for all concerned. 59 goals in 152 appearances, of which 69 were from the bench, shows what the 25 year old is capable of but it seems unlikely Louis van Gaal will be any more likely to offer the striker a regular chance to prove himself.
