Here’s the side we’re pretty sure Roy Hodgson will select for England to start against Italy on Saturday evening, with Danny Welbeck and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain unlikely to play due to injury problems.

GK) Joe Hart

Without question, barring a late injury, Hart will start between the sticks looking to thwart Mario Balotelli and co.

DR) Glen Johnson

Often criticised for neglecting his defensive duties, Johnson will struggle to provide a consistently attacking threat up the right flank because of the weather conditions – meaning he may have to tame his instincts.

DC) Phil Jagielka

Jagielka should start alongside Cahill in central defence, with Phil Jones and Chris Smalling providing backup options from the bench.

DC) Gary Cahill

Cahill will lead the England defence, looking to marshal those around him. The Chelsea man is brilliant in the air, but is equally as composed with the ball at his feet.

DL) Leighton Baines

Baines will almost certainly get the nod over wonderkid Luke Shaw, who was selected as part of the squad instead of legendary fullback Ashley Cole – widely regarded as England’s best player at big tournaments over the past decade.

MC) Steven Gerrard

Gerrard did have a niggling injury concern, but Hodgson has dismissed the fears, confirming that his skipper will start. He’ll look to dictate tempo and possession at the base of midfield.

MC) Jordan Henderson

Henderson should get the nod over Jack Wilshere to start alongside Gerrard, due to his increased work-rate. He also plays with Gerrard at club level for Liverpool, which similarly works in his favour.

AMR) Adam Lallana

Lallana could start on the right, but will be encouraged to move into central midfield when England are not in possession to help Gerrard and Henderson.

AMC) Raheem Sterling

Rumours are increasing that Sterling’s been so mesmerically good in training , he’ll be given the pivotal no.10 role instead of Wayne Rooney. it would be a very brave decision from Hodgson, but an exciting one. Sterling’s pace and trickery could cause the Italians countless problems.

AML) Wayne Rooney

Like he was against Honduras, Rooney could well play on the left. He’ll be able to cut in and shoot on his brilliant right foot – but will be no doubt be disappointed if he isn’t used centrally.

FC) Daniel Sturridge

Sturridge provides pace, power and goals from a central position. He scored 21 Premier League goals last term, and will be desperate to punish the slow Italian defence.
