The World Cup kicks off in Brazil tomorrow evening, and the excitement is almost too much to handle!

Here’s our ten favourite World Cup national side nicknames.

Enjoy!

10) Brazil – El Selecao (The Selection)

Simple, but we love it. To be called into the Brazil squad is probably a bigger honour than being called up to any other national side, because of the country’s wonderful footballing history. ‘El Selecao’ are the favourites to lift their sixth World Cup this summer…

9) Spain -La Furia Roja (The Red Fury)

‘The Red Fury’ pretty much sums up the devastation Spain have handed out to most opponents they’ve in recent history. They go into the tournament as holders, and an incomparably brilliant set of creative midfielders.

8) England -The Three Lions

Brilliantly English. Such a good nickname, Baddiel & Skinner and the Lightning Seeds sung a pretty awesome song about it.

7) Japan – Samurai Blue

Half the nickname pays homage to Japan’s heritage, and the other half explains the colour kit they were. Job done.

6) Colombia – Los Cafeteros (The Coffee Growers)

By far the least intimidating nickname in our top 10, ‘The Coffee Growers’ do boast a brilliant strike force which includes Jackson Martinez, Carlos Bacca and Adrian Ramos!

5) Bosnia –  Zlatni Ljiljani (The Golden Lilies)

The Golden Lilies are competing in their first ever World Cup – and while the nickname seems tame at first, it’s important to remember that the aforementioned flower represents death!

4) Algeria – The Desert Foxes

Foxes are cunning, smart and often sly – and Algeria will have to be all these things if they’re going to have a hope at getting through their group this summer!

3) Greece – Piratiko (The Pirates)

An abode to Greece’s nautical history, ‘The Pirates’ are in arguably the weakest group of the competition which includes Ivory Coast, Colombia and Japan – where anything could happen.

2) Mexic0 0 Los Ratones Verdes (The Green mice)

This one’s brilliant. Normally, Mexico are simply referred to as ‘La Verde’, but when fans are disappointed with performances, they slightly alter the nickname!

1) Cameroon – The Indomitable Lions

‘Indomitable’ means ‘impossible to subdue or defeat’. So an Indomitable Lion is about the scariest most intimidating thing we can imagine!
