Dodgy 2014 World Cup XI: Arsenal And Liverpool Flops Among World Cup Wallies

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur players make the lineup.

The World Cup is, as its name suggests, the pinnacle of global football.

Brazil 2014 will see some of the best players on the planet giving their all to help their respective nations achieve international glory.

However, among the brilliance of Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar, there will be a number of individuals whose right to represent their country on the grandest stage of all is severely questioned.

We have complied a starting XI of World Cup wallies.

Goalkeeper – Julio Cesar – Brazil

It’s a good job Brazil are excellent going forward, because the hosts and tournament favourites will have a 34-year-old who spent this season at Toronto FC between the sticks.

Right-back – Glen Johnson – England

The Liverpool man has been called a rubbish winger playing at full-back by his critics.

Perhaps that is a tad harsh, but he is certainly the weak link in England’s back four.

Left-back – Benoit Assou-Ekotto – Cameroon

Tottenham Hotspur defender Assou-Ekotto has plenty of talent, but his super chilled out attitude exasperates fans.

He takes too many unnecessary chances and, in a group that includes Brazil, Croatia and Mexico, he could end up costing his country dear.

Centre-back – Philippe Senderos – Switzerland

Senderos became a household name in England in the noughties thanks to a number of dodgy displays for Arsenal.

He managed to stay with the Gunners for six seasons, which is impressive, but not as impressive as the number of international caps he’s managed to get his hands on – 53.

Centre-back – Gabriel Paletta – Italy

Born and raised in Buenos Aires, former Liverpool defender Paletta failed to represent Argentina, so he defected.

He will be Italy’s fourth choice centre-back at Brazil 2014.

Right midfield – Silvestre Varela – Portugal

Varela is strong and pacy and, at his best, can frighten full-backs to death.

However, the Porto man’s physical attributes are not matched in more technical areas and he can be such a frustrating player to watch.

Left midfield – James Milner – England

Milner is very hardworking, energetic and reasonably talented. He will give his all to the cause; no matter what position he is asked to play in.

The problem is he has collected the tag of utility man and nobody now seems to know who or what he is. He is ok at everything, but excels at nothing.

He is most likely to play in central midfield or at right-back for England, but we’re sure he would be more than happy to ‘do a job’ on the left flank.

Centre midfield – Marouane Fellaini – Belgium

Fellaini actually has a pretty impressive record for Belgium.

He has scored eight goals in 49 senior internationals.

However, the curly-haired powerhouse had such a stinker of a season at Manchester United that, on current form, he walks straight into our team of wallies.

Centre midfield – Didier Zokora – Ivory Coast

Zokora was once the driving force of the Ivory Coast’s midfield, but that role, of course, now belongs to Yaya Toure.

The former Spurs box-to-boxer was never very good offensively, but now his defensive game is starting to fall apart too.

Zokora has lost his pace and the 33-year-old, who has 120 caps to his name, is one of the weak links in an otherwise very good team.

Striker – Park Chu-young – South Korea

The 28-year-old, who was released by Arsenal this summer, made just three club appearances this season – one for the Gunners and two while on loan at Watford.

Despite his severe rustiness, he has included in South Korea’s World Cup squad – a brave move by head coach Hong Myung-Bo.

Striker – Jo – Brazil

The 27-year-old target man is currently playing his club football in Brazil, after flopping for Manchester City.

He joined the Citizens for £18m in July 2008, but he scored just one Premier League goal in 21 games for the Sky Blues.

His international record is slightly better – five goals in 17 senior appearances – but his continued inclusion in Luiz Felipe Scolari’s squads in baffling.
