Liverpool’s Perfect Transfer Window This Summer – Rodgers’ Starting XI Including £40m Southampton Duo

How the Reds would like their summer of business to unfold.

After finishing second in the Premier League in 2013/14 and therefore qualifying for the Champions League, Liverpool need to bolster their squad ahead of next season.

Manager Brendan Rodgers has his side playing a freeflowing attacking game, but would probably not argue that he needs more players to compete in four competitions.

The Reds have already signed Rickie Lambert from Southampton and Emre Can from Bayer Leverkusen this summer, but here is how Rodgers’ starting XI could look next term after a perfect transfer window.

GK – Simon Mignolet

Signed from Sunderland for £9m in 2013 not everyone was convinced by Mignolet’s first 12 months on Merseyside, but Rodgers is a big fan of the Belgium international.

RB – Jon Flanagan

Some may be shocked not to see Glen Johnson in this XI, but the England international was one of the weakest links in the team last campaign and Flanagan was a much more reliable source.

LB – Alberto Moreno

With Luis Enrique injured and Aly Cissokho failing to impress, Rodgers has made signing a new left-back a priority and this Sevilla ace is his No.1 target – although there are disagreements over the price at the moment.

CB – Martin Skrtel

If the side were weak in one area last season it was defence and Daniel Agger is expected to be sold, Kolo Toure is not considered good enough and Mamadou Sakho needs more time to adjust. Leaving Skrtel at the back.

CB – Dejan Lovren

To partner the Slovakian in central defence is a player who has requested a transfer at Southampton and could join Lambert by making the switch to Anfield, in what is expected to be a £15m deal.

CM – Steven Gerrard

After moving to a more deeplying role Gerrard continues to show his versatility at 34-years-old and the captain has the potential to extend his career in the mould of say Andrea Pirlo at Juventus.

CM – Jordan Henderson

Despite the signing of Can, Henderson’s impressive displays in central midfield last term means the England international should retain his place alongside the skipper.

CAM – Adam Lallana

Not satisfied with Lambert and Lovren, the Merseysiders are also keen on bringing Lallana to the club after the midfielder’s impressive two years in the English top flight and are willing to pay £25m for his services.

RW – Xherdan Shaqiri

Despite the success Raheem Sterling enjoyed on the right flank last campaign we expect Rodgers to adopt more of a rotation policy in 2014/15 and acquiring the frustrated Shaqiri from Bayern Munich would be a great coup.

ST – Daniel Sturridge

After scoring 21 league goals last season Sturridge finally proved he is the top-class striker many thought he was capable of and the £12m Rodgers paid to Chelsea for the 24-year-old in January 2013 now looks like a bargain.

LW – Luis Suarez

Despite strong interest from Real Madrid it’s expected that Suarez will stay with the Reds next year having won the PFA Player of the Year earlier in 2014 after scoring 31 league goals in just 33 appearances.
