England kick off their World Cup journey in tonight’s late game as they take on Italy at the Arena de Amazonia.

Roy Hodgson’s side were eliminated from Euro 2012 by the same opposition two years ago, but there is a renewed sense of optimism about the Three Lions’ preparation to this tournament, with a number of exciting young players given the chance to make an impact – with some in contention to make the starting eleven this evening.

Manchester United forward Danny Welbeck has been passed fit and could play a part, though there will be calls for in-form Liverpool starlet Raheem Sterling to start, as well as Southampton star Adam Lallana. Wayne Rooney, meanwhile, could operate in a slightly deeper role than usual in order to accommodate Daniel Sturridge, with the United star still waiting for his first World Cup goal after eight appearances.

Italy will also welcome back some key players from injury worries, with Mario Balotelli and Marco Verratti expected to play, though full-back Mattia De Sciglio’s absence could mean Cesare Prandelli’s side line up with three central defenders.

This game will only be the second time these two sides have met in a World Cup, with Italy triumping 2-1 over England in the third place playoff back in 1990, and England’s recent record against the Azzurri is poor, with just two wins in their last eleven meetings.
