England 1-2 Italy World Cup Player Ratings: Wayne Rooney Flops as Liverpool Pair Shine

England impressed in patches and were a real threat in the final third but still fell to Italy, here’s our ratings for Roy Hodgson’s men.

Joe Hart 6/10

Poor decision making, bad parrying but not to blame for either goal.

Leighton Baines 5/10

Both goals came down the left and the Everton man was not his usually reliable best.

Gary Cahill 7/10

Fairly solid display, some solid last ditch tackling as and when needed.

Phil Jagielka 7/10

Also assured and barely put a foot wrong. Great last ditch clearance off the line from Mario Balotelli’s goal-bound effort.

Glen Johnson 6/10

Fairly solid on the back foot but needs to learn how to cross a ball!

Steven Gerrard 7/10

Understated display, did most things right if not spectacularly.

Jordan Henderson 6.5/10

Measuured display but fan out of energy in the second half.

Danny Welbeck 7/10

Never stopped running, caused the Italian defence all sorts of problems but needs to be more composed in front of goal.

Raheem Sterling 8/10

Speedy, assured and a player Italy just couldn’t handle. Understandably tired towards the end.

Wayne Rooney 4/10

Was anonymous for much of the game, off the pace and offered little but for a decent assist but needs to be dropped.

Daniel Sturridge 7.5/10

Took his goal well and was full of life throughout.

Subs

Ross Barkley 7/10

Made an instant impact forcing a save from Sirigu seconds after coming on.

Jack Wilshere 6/10

Lots of huff and puff but nothing to show for his efforts.
