Six Ridiculously Overvalued Players, Including Liverpool’s £30m Transfer Target

Man United and Chelsea also involved in mad transfer talk.

While the rest of the world struggles financially, football, as a business, is more lucrative now than ever before.

The summer transfer window is set to open in less than a month and some serious money will be spent – some wisely and some rather less so.

We have picked out a handful of potential moves with transfer fees that we feel are stupidly inflated.

Luke Shaw

Club: Southampton

Linked with: Manchester United

Quoted price: £30m

United are reportedly prepared to make 18-year-old left-back Shaw one of the most expensive teenagers in the world by shelling out £30m for him.

Unless he turns into Gareth Bale, who cost Spurs just short of £10m in 2007, it is difficult to see how the Red Devils will get value for money with such a deal.

Eliaquim Mangala

Club: Porto

Linked with: Chelsea and Manchester City

Quoted price: £35m

Mangala is fast, strong and brave. He is a talented 23-year centre-back, but £35m for a three-time France international who has only ever played club football in Belgium and Portugal is just obscene.

William Carvalho

Club: Sporting Lisbon

Linked with: Manchester United

Quoted price: £35m

In April, Portugal midfielder Carvalho, 22, was said to be close to moving to Old Trafford for the crazy fee of £35m, but the sacking of David Moyes may well have killed the deal. Probably for the best.

Adam Lallana

Club: Southampton

Linked with: Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur

Quoted price: £30m

Liverpool and Tottenham are both still keen on Lallana, who, despite being frequently referred to as a youngster, is 26 years old.

The Reds have made two hefty bids for the England midfielder, but they are apparently baulking, understandably, at Southampton’s £30m asking price.

Edinson Cavani

Club: Paris Saint-Germain

Linked with: Manchester United

Quoted price: £56m

After three brilliant seasons with Napoli, for whom he scored 78 Serie A goals, Cavani move to PSG last summer for a fee in the region of £55m.

He netted 16 league goals in his first season in France, but he is said to be unhappy at having to play out of position to accommodate main forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic at Parc des Princes.

With Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie currently competing for one striking spot at Old Trafford, surely bringing another expensive moaner into the mix would be a disaster waiting to happen?

David Luiz

Club: Paris Saint-Germain

Signed from: Chelsea

Quoted price: £50m

This is, of course, a deal that has already happened, but it doesn’t make it any less crazy.

Luiz, who was often considered as a defensive weak link at Chelsea, is now the world’s most expensive defender after moving to PSG for £50m.

The 27-year-old has 37 caps for Brazil, so obviously he’s a decent player, but the Stamford Bridge club will be very pleased with how this deal went.
