Old Trafford side re-ignite interest in Athletic Bilbao star.
Man United are set to re-ignite their long running interest in Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera according to the Daily Express.
The 24 year old has been the subject of interest for former Old Trafford bosses Sir Alex Ferguson and David Moyes and now chief executive Ed Woodward is set to launch a £25m bid for the Spaniard.
Herrera’s contract contains a £30m release clause which will increase to £35m by the 1st of July so quite why the La Liga side would choose to accept a £25m offer is hard to fathom.
Though capped 15 times at Spanish Under 21 level, helping his side to a European Under 21 Championship title in 2011, Herrera is still to earn a full senior cap and may well feel a high-profile move to Man United would help in that regard.
Given that his Basque side secured a top four finish and a Champions League berth there is even less of a reason for Ernesto Valverde’s side to look to cash-in on Herrera.
One can well see why Louis van Gaal is keen to bring in central midfield talents this summer given how poor a season the likes of Marouane Fellaini, Tom Cleverley and Michael Carrick had in 2013/14 but the incoming Man United boss may do best to look elsewhere.
