10. Daley Blind, Netherlands

It was a chance to take revenge for the Dutch in their opening game against Spain having lost to the nation in 2010 tournament and they didn’t waste their chance.

In a 5-1 rout of the reigning champions Ajax’s Blind – operating as a left wing-back – was superb going forward and solid in defence.

9. Oscar, Brazil

Many of the opening game plaudits may have gone to the Brazilian talisman Neymar, but it was this Chelsea playmaker that really pulled the strings for his country.

After a shaky start nearly everything creative went through Oscar and the 22-year-old capped off a great display with a late goal.

8. Alexis Sanchez, Chile

In a group that also contains Netherlands and the Spanish, many thought the South Americans would struggle, but Sanchez helped brush Australia aside 3-1.

The FC Barcelona forward scored the opener for his side and also provided the assist for one more.

7. Karim Benzema, France

With Bayern Munich star Franck Ribery injured much of the attacking pressure has fallen on this Real Madrid striker and the 26-year-old didn’t disappoint.

Against a very physical Honduras side Benzema netted twice and forced an own goal in a 3-0 victory for his team.

6. James Rodriguez, Colombia

In what is considered to be one of the weaker groups at the tournament the Colombians showed that they may well dominate with a convincing 3-0 win over Greece.

With Radamel Falcao out with a cruciate ligament injury the creative responsibility fell on the shoulders of his AS Monaco teammate Rodriguez – who also scored.

5. Joel Campbell, Costa Rica

The biggest shock of the competition so far has been the Costa Ricans dominant 3-1 win over two-time winners Uruguay.

During the game Arsenal youngster Campbell caused the South Americans’ defence all sorts of problems and scored a great goal.

4. Thomas Muller, Germany

In what was billed as one of the biggest opening games the Germans brushed aside Portugal 4-0 in which Muller scored twice on his 50th cap.

Some theatrics that earned opposition player Pepe a red card sours things somewhat, but the Bayern forward looked sharp throughout.

3. Antonio Candreva, Italy

The Italians came through what looks to be their hardest game of Group D against England with a 2-1 win, which was led by a fine display from Lazio’s Candreva.

Playing off Mario Balotelli the winger caused the English defence problems all night and set up the winner for the striker with a fine cross.

2. Arjen Robben, Netherlands

The second Dutchman now and a winger who netted twice in the 5-1 victory with two well taken and composed finishes.

The second from Robben was particularly special, as the 30-year-old left Sergio Ramos for dead, before rounding Iker Casillas and burying the fifth for his country.

1. Robin van Persie, Netherlands

Finally top of the pile and it’s little surprise that it is yet another from Louis van Gaal’s side, with their win over the Spaniards something to savour.

Van Persie drew his side level after going 1-0 with a brilliant and inventive header from a Blind cross and then caught Casillas napping to dispossess the goalkeeper and net his second.
