Five Central Midfielders Louis Van Gaal Is Targeting For Manchester United Including Former Arsenal Ace

The players the Dutchman wants in the middle of the park.

After guiding the Netherlands at the 2014 World Cup experienced manager Louis van Gaal will take over officially as David Moyes’ successor at Manchester United.

The 62-year-old has a tough task on his hands after the Red Devils finished with their lowest ever Premier League points tally in 2013/14 and no European football for the first time since 1981.

However, having guided FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Ajax to varied successes in the past van Gaal certainly has the required CV and the Dutchman will be looking to put his own stamp on the squad with new transfers.

One key area for recruitment is in central midfield, where United lacked creativity and potency last season and here are five new players the club are targeting this summer.

William Carvalho, Sporting Lisbon

This Portugal international has been a long-term target for the team, with Moyes scouting the 22-year-old on several occasions in a bid to land him.

The Scot may have gone, but the interest remains, although van Gaal will have to pay a premium price for the Sporting star.

Jordy Clasie, Feyenoord

With who the Red Devils now have in charge it was always likely that a number of Dutch internationals would be linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Clasie has been impressing in the Eredivisie and many fans are sure to be keeping a close eye on the 22-year-old at the World Cup.

Bastian Schweinsteiger, Bayern Munich

A step up now and a 29-year-old who is among the most experienced midfielders in the game having enjoyed a successful career with Bayern and Germany.

Although at a hugely successful club currently, the lure of playing in England and working under van Gaal again could be too good to refuse.

Alex Song, FC Barcelona

With Cesc Fabregas having left the Nou Camp for Chelsea last week, the exodus from Barca looks set to continue with Song also deemed surplus to requirements.

Following a £16m move from Arsenal in 2012 the Cameroon international has struggled to establish himself in the starting XI in Catalonia and could bring some defensive solidity to the United team.

Kevin Strootman, AS Roma

Another Netherlands star now, although someone who is not competing at the World Cup due to a cruciate ligament injury.

Up until that Strootman had been greatly impressing for Roma and van Gaal may look to make the 24-year-old a January target instead.
