With the 2014 World Cup in Brazil now in full flow CaughtOffside thought it was a good time to look back at the 10 best goals that have been scored so far in the tournament.
10. Jean Beausejour – CHILE v Australia
In the opening 3-1 victory for the South Americans the Wigan Athletic man ensured all three points in extra time.
9. Clint Dempsey – USA v Ghana
The Americans also started their tournament with a win and were 1-0 up after just 31 seconds thanks to this effort.
8. Neymar – BRAZIL v Croatia
In the opening match of the tournament the hosts looked to their talisman for inspiration and he provided this.
7. Daniel Sturridge – ENGLAND v Italy
After going 1-0 down to the Italians the Three Lions responded in fantastic fashion with this well crafted goal.
6. Arjen Robben – NETHERLANDS v Spain
The Dutch completed a 5-1 rout over the world champions and this was Robben’s second and best goal of the game.
5. Joel Campbell – COSTA RICA v Uruguay
The biggest shock of the competition so far was the Costa Ricans’ 3-1 victory over Uruguay, in which Arsenal’s Campbell did this.
4. Keisuke Honda – JAPAN v Ivory Coast
Despite losing 2-1 in this match the opening strike from Honda was something to savour.
3. Claudio Marchisio – ITALY v England
This well crafted free-kick got things going for the Italians in a game they won 2-1.
2. Lionel Messi – ARGENTINA v Bosnia & Herzegovina
After failing to score at the 2010 World Cup the four-time Ballon d’Or winner silenced any doubters with this strike.
1. Robin van Persie – NETHERLANDS v Spain
Back to the demolition of the Spaniards and a header by van Persie that impressed everyone who saw it.
