The midfield enforcer left Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich at the beginning of last season having failed to force his way into their starting line up, however, his performances with Wolfsburg have once again alerted him to some of Europe’s top clubs this time around.

Inter Milan and Monaco are both thought to be keen on bringing him on board, whilst earlier in the campaign he was linked with a switch to United’s cross city rivals Manchester City.

Reports in Germany and Italy on Thursday, though, are now claiming that United are the frontrunners to land his signature.

New manager Louis van Gaal wants to bring in a defensive midfielder this summer, but will have to meet Gustavo’s €33m release clause in order to snap him up.

Gustavo made 30 appearances across all competitions last season, picking up four goals in the process. His form saw him earn a recall into the Brazil squad just in time for the World Cup and he started the country’s opening clash against Croatia last week.
