Watch as Costa Rica stun Italy to qualify for the knock-out stages and send England heading home early.

CONCACAF side Costa Rica have once again stunned the football world by beating more fancied opposition at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, beating Italy 1-0 in Recife to qualify for the last 16 and send England crashing out of the competition.

The Central American side were superb from the first whistle, closing down and hassling Italy in a 3-5-2 system reminiscent of that which Chile had used to such great effect against Spain earlier in the week.

Whilst Mario Balotelli had the first excellent chance, lobbing over Keylor Navas when clean through, Costa Rica deserved their lead when Bryan Ruiz headed home at the far post just sixty seconds after a clear foul on Joel Campbell in the box had been waved away by the referee.

Cesare Prandelli sent on Antonio Cassano, Alessio Cerci and Lorenzo Insigne as time in the second half ticked away but his team toiled in the Recife heat and failed to create any meaningful chances, with Costa Rica looking the most likely side to add a second goal.
