5. Adnan Januzaj

Age: 19

Position: Winger

Club: Manchester United

Nationality: Belgian

Januzaj disappointed a host of other countries in April when he committed his international future to Belgium, where, after all, he was born.

Five months earlier, he had signed a lucrative long-term contract at Old Trafford, which reportedly included a £5m signing-on fee, plus a weekly wage of £60,000.

Januzaj’s emergence was one of the few positives of a very disappointing season for United.

The teenage wing wizard made 27 Premier League appearances, including 12 off the bench. He completed 51 dribbles, scored three goals and provided four assists.

4. Saul Niguez

Age: 19

Position: Midfielder

Club: Atletico Madrid

Nationality: Spanish

Niguez spent last season on loan at Rayo Vallecano and started 34 La Liga games.

He was deployed 13 times as a strapping centre-back, but most of his appearances came as a defensive midfielder.

Niguez has represented Spain at six different youth levels and it is only a matter of time before he plays for the senior side.

3. Luke Shaw

Age: 18

Position: Defender

Club: Southampton

Nationality: English

Shaw does not turn 19 until next month, but he has already racked up 60 Premier League appearances for the Saints, including 57 starts.

England manager Roy Hodgson certainly believes in him, having selected him ahead of Ashley Cole in his 23-man World Cup squad.

2. Kurt Zouma

Age: 19

Position: Defender

Club: Chelsea

Nationality: French

Chelsea signed Zouma from Saint Etienne for £12m in January, but he was immediately loaned back to the French club for the remainder of the season.

He played 24 Ligue 1 games for Saint Etienne last term and would have made more appearances had he not been harshly banned for 10 matches for a full-blooded tackle that resulted in Sochaux’s Thomas Guerbert breaking his leg.

Despite his one high-profile misdemeanour, Zouma is an excellent tackler and this, coupled with his top-notch positional sense, helped him avoid picking up any yellow cards in France’s top division in the 2013-14 campaign.

1. Raheem Sterling

Age: 19

Position: Winger

Club: Liverpool

Nationality: English

Sterling was one of the attacking stars of Liverpool’s brilliant season, which saw the Reds battling, albeit in vain, for their first Premier League title on the final day.

The Jamaica-born speedster scored nine league goals and chipped in with five assists, earning him an England World Cup call.

He started in both of England’s narrow Group D defeats in Brazil and he is set to play a key role in the Three Lions team for many years to come.
