England manager Roy Hodgson will name something of a makeshift starting lineup for his side’s final game of Group D against World Cup surprise package Costa Rica.

With the Three Lions already confirmed as being out of the tournament following two defeats to Italy and Uruguay, as well as Costa Rica’s shock 1-0 win over Italy in their last game, Tuesday’s match will largely be seen as a chance to experiment before heading home, with youngsters Luke Shaw and Ross Barkley expected to start, while veteran midfielder Frank Lampard will be named captain for what will almost definitely be his last appearance for his country.

Costa Rica and England have never played each other before, and the Central American side will be hoping to pull off another memorable result which would see them emerge as surprise winners of a difficult group in which they would largely have been viewed as the weakest team at the start of the competition.

England will be hoping to restore some pride from this poor showing so far in Brazil, but will finish with zero points at a World Cup for the first time ever if they find themselves on the back of another loss.
