Five Players In And Five Out For England’s Euro 2016 Campaign With Liverpool Flop Axed & Arsenal Star Included

The players that should be leaving Hodgson’s squad and those that should replace them.

It has been a disappointing 2014 World Cup campaign for England in which the nation have been knocked out at the group stage for the first time since 1958.

However, unlike in previous years the hysteria that surrounds the country’s exit has not accompanied their failure and instead there is a calm understanding that manager Roy Hodgson is still the right man and progress will be slow.

Despite that, with Euro 2016 the Three Lions’ next chance to impress on the international stage Hodgson will be looking towards how he can improve his squad and who could be axed in favour of emerging talent.

So here are five exits we expect to be dropped from the current squad and five to be brought in to replace them.

Out: Frank Lampard.

Little surprise here, as having turned 36-years-old whilst away with the national team in Brazil this was always likely to be Lampard’s swansong and the Chelsea veteran will wear the captain’s armband in what his likely to be his last ever appearance for the English against Costa Rica.

Replaced by: James Ward-Prowse.

Despite the problems Southampton are enduring currently, St Mary’s remains a hotbed for developing young, English talent and this midfielder could be the answer to the country’s problems in the middle.

Out: Phil Jagielka.

Although the Everton captain did little wrong at the World Cup, Jagielka is nothing more than an average player and at 31-years-old he isn’t getting any younger either.

Replaced by: John Stones.

Meanwhile his teammate at Goodison Park had such an impressive season in 2013/14 that the 19-year-old was Hodgson’s first backup should there have been an injury to his squad and has a great future ahead of him.

Out: Glen Johnson.

It was a particularly disappointing tournament for Johnson, who appeared to only be in the side by virtue of the fact he was the only option and last term at Liverpool highlighted the 29-year-old’s defensive fragility.

Replaced by: Nathaniel Clyne.

Although spent much of last campaign sharing the right-back role for the Saints with fellow Englishman Calum Chambers, due to his advanced age it’s likely to be Clyne who gets the nod first by Hodgson.

Out: Ben Foster.

This West Bromwich Albion No.1 will start against the Costa Ricans, which judging by his woeful display against Ecuador in a pre-tournament friendly seems harsh on Celtic’s Fraser Forster and Foster should be axed as soon as the squad returns from South America.

Replaced by: Jack Butland.

Hopefully for Butland this next year at Stoke City will prove fruitful for the 21-year-old in terms of appearances and if his progress continues at the steady rate it is currently the youngster could well be challenging Joe Hart for the starting berth soon.

Out: Leighton Baines.

This may seem a little harsh on a left-back who has been waiting in the wings for so long for Ashley Cole to retire, but his World Cup displays showed Baines is some way short of the Blues veteran and at 29-years-old may have simply missed his chance.

Replaced by: Kieran Gibbs.

Quietly getting on with things at Arsenal, Gibbs has often been overlooked by the national team, but with growing Champions League experience and confidence the 24-year-old could be the long-term answer on the left side of defence.
