And now the good folks at Twitter Data have put together a comprehensive rundown of who and what has been the most mentioned, most popular and most viewed tweets of the World Cup so far.

In a surprising turn of events, Argentina’s Lionel Messi pipped Uruguayan hit man Luis Suarez to most mentioned player, despite Suarez being thrust into the limelight after biting Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini.


Thanks to the rise of social media, the 2014 World Cup has been the biggest tournament ever as over 300m tweets have been posted throughout the group stage alone.
