Since the legendary boss retired, the Red Devils have gone crazy in the transfer market…

Since the brilliant Sir Alex Ferguson retired from his managerial position at the helm of Manchester United, the club have backed firstly David Moyes and now Louis van Gaal in the transfer market.

In two and a half transfer windows since, the club have signed six players – for a mammoth £121.5m.

And here they are…

1) Guillermo Varela – £2.4m

Are we ever likely to see Varela in a United shirt? We’re not too sure… The 21-year-old signed from Penarol as David Moyes took charge, but he hasn’t made an appearance yet – and we find it quite unlikely that he’ll ever force himself into the side considering the fact the club has just spent £27m on someone three years his younger.

2) Saidy Janko – £700,000

The 19-year-old Swiss currently plays in the United reserve sides, and at 19-years-old, is apparently showing some significant promise. At less than £1m, even if he doesn’t make the grade it doesn’t really matter – when you consider his transfer fee is the equivalent of two weeks Wayne Rooney salary. Janko represents the kind of signing David Moyes was given during his first transfer window, when he was crying out world-class signings.

3) Marouane Fellaini – £27.5m

The Belgian signed just before deadline day, and so far, his transfer has been a total flop. While injuries curtailed his season, his performances when he was fit enough to step onto the field were not anywhere near good enough to justify the mammoth fee.

4) Juan Mata – £37.1m

Mata cost a lot of money, but no United fans have complained yet. While his start at Old Trafford was slow, mainly because he was asked to play on the right wing – he slowly began to show his ludicrous ability towards the end of the season. Mata thrived in a more central role, and the only task Louis van Gaal has is how to field the Spaniard and Wayne Rooney in the same side.

5) Ander Herrera – £28.8m

United have signed the Spanish midfielder, yet to be capped, from Athletic Bilbao after meeting his large release clause. He’s technically able, and prides himself on his ability to maintain possession in tight areas, while also working hard in both defence and offence. Time will tell whether he’s worth the large fee.

6) Luke Shaw – £27m

United today made Luke Shaw the most expensive teenager of all time, shelling out £27m, potentially rising to £31m, for his services. He showed last season with Southampton that he has the potential to develop into one of the very best left-back’s in world football, but the price United have paid is what you’d expect to spend on someone who had already earned that title.
