United agree deal for Arsenal defender.
Manchester United could be set to follow up deals for Ander Herrera and Luke Shaw with the £11m signing of Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen, according to the Daily Star.
The 28-year-old has been widely tipped to be leaving the Emirates Stadium this summer after falling out of favour with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, with new United boss Louis van Gaal keen to make the most of the opportunity to snap him up.
With experienced centre-back pairing Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand both departing Old Trafford at the end of this season, Vermaelen could be a good-value replacement in defence as the Red Devils look to get back to their best after a difficult campaign in 2013/14.
Once regarded as one of the most solid defensive players in the Premier League, Vermaelen could benefit from a fresh start at a new club, and it seems that a fee of £11m has been agreed between the two clubs, with only a few minor details to finalise before a move can be confirmed.
If the deal goes through later today, it will be United’s third signing in as many days after Shaw’s move from Southampton was announced on Friday and Herrera was unveiled on Thursday following his move from Athletic Bilbao.
