Mourinho keen to land United target.
Chelsea look set to meet the £30m asking price of Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho as they hope to sign the player ahead of Manchester United, according to the Daily Mirror.
The Portuguese youngster is widely regarded as one of the biggest prospects in Europe at the moment after some superb displays for his club in recent times, with United previously linked as his biggest admirers in this summer’s transfer window.
However, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is also known to keep an eye out on the best talent coming out of his native Portugal, and is seemingly ready to pay Sporting’s hefty demands to bring the 22-year-old to Stamford Bridge for next season.
Although the Blues already have a number of quality options in the middle of the park, particularly with the recent signing of Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona, Mourinho is keen to continue investing in that position as doubts remain over the future of players such as Ramires and John Obi Mikel, while veteran England midfielder Frank Lampard has also left the club.
Chelsea and United are also in competition for the signing of Bayern Munich midfielder Toni Kroos, though with Carvalho now likely to be heading to London, it could be that the German playmaker will be Old Trafford-bound this summer.
