According to reports from the Express today, Arsenal have moved ahead of Liverpool in the race to secure the signing of Chilean World Cup star Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona.

The 25 year-old suffered World Cup heartbreak when his penalty was saved by Julio Cesar in Belo Horizonte as hosts Brazil edged past Chile on penalties in the last sixteen, but the blow is set to be soften by a big-money summer move to the Premier League.

Sanchez has emerged as one of Europe’s deadliest attacking forces since moving from River Plate to Udinese in 2008, spending three successful years at the Serie A club before moving on to Barcelona.

Despite scoring 39 La Liga goals over two seasons for the Catalan giants, however, he is believed to have been made surplus to requirements by new manager Luis Enrique, who is looking to rebuild his squad at the Nou Camp after joining from Celta Vigo.

Liverpool had been considered to be favourites to land Sanchez, with his involvement in a player-plus-cash deal for Luis Suarez having been suggested, but it now appears as though Arsenal have moved ahead of the Reds in the chase for Sanchez.

Brendan Rodgers now seems to have turned his attentions primarily towards Lazar Markovic and Divock Origi, however, perhaps due to being edged out by Wenger in the chase for Sanchez.
