Premier League Flops Who Have Become World Cup Heroes Including Arsenal & Liverpool Failures

The players who failed in the English top tier but have performed well in Brazil.

There have been some impressive performances at the 2014 World Cup so far, both from teams as a whole and individuals.

Annoyingly for a number of Premier League clubs there are also stars who failed when they played for them, but have flourished on the international stage.

Here are a few examples.

10. Marouane Fellaini, Belgium

A little bit of a contentious one to start with as not many Everton fans would describe Fellaini as a flop, but not many could argue that the 27-year-old hasn’t played better for the national side than he did for Manchester United during his first season at Old Trafford in 2013/14.

The Belgian was largely disappointing for the Red Devils following his £27.5m switch from Goodison Park, but scored in his nation’s comeback against Algeria in Group H and has looked generally solid.

9. Andranik Teymourian, Iran

With just a handful of games to his name during four years with Bolton Wanderers and Fulham, many could be forgiven for having forgotten this 31-year-old even played in England.

Yet as the Iranian team sprung many surprises at the World Cup – despite eventually going out – Teymourian was at the heart of anything positive from the Asian side.

8. Gervinho, Ivory Coast

Admittedly the forward wasn’t a complete disaster during his time with Arsenal, but there weren’t many Gunners fans sad to see the 27-year-old leave for AS Roma last summer.

Yet after an impressive year in Italy the Ivorian continued that form at the World Cup with two goals before the Africans were knocked out by Greece.

7. Gonzalo Jara, Chile

Supporters of West Bromwich Albion, Brighton & Hove Albion and most recently Nottingham Forest will hardly have fond memories of this defender.

In fact the latter allowed Jara to leave on a free transfer from the City Ground this summer, making his classy performances in an impressive Chilean campaign all the more bewildering.

6. Carl Medjani, Algeria

Signed by Gerard Houllier for Liverpool back in 2003 after a transfer battle with Manchester United, this Algerian then failed to make a single appearance during three miserable years at Anfield.

Yet as his country reached the last-16 of the competition for the first time in their history the defender has played a key part in that success.

5. Pablo Armero, Colombia

With Razvan Rat having a poor six months with West Ham United in the first part of last season, the Hammers then replaced the Romanian with this Napoli left-back with a similar lack of success.

The Colombians have been one of the best teams at the tournament in Brazil though, conceding just once and Armero netting their first goal in a 3-0 opening game victory over the Greeks.

4. Julio Cesar, Brazil

Although this goalkeeper built a fine reputation for himself on the international stage and with Inter Milan, upon his move to QPR in 2012 the South American proved to be an expensive disaster.

Cesar was third choice at Loftus Road last term and was sent out on-loan to Toronto FC, but has become a hero for the Brazilians for his penalty shootout saves in the last-16 win over Chile.

3. Gary Medel, Chile

It’s a player for the Chileans now and Cardiff City’s club record signing at £11m, although did little for the Bluebirds as they suffered relegation from the top flight this year.

Although still on the books in the Welsh capital, by virtue of a clause written into his contract Medel is expected to be on his way again in the near future.

2. Giovanni dos Santos, Mexico

Never quite living up to his reputation with either FC Barcelona or later Tottenham Hotspur, dos Santos has proven to be something of a late bloomer and was one of La Liga’s best players last season with Villarreal.

Although the Mexicans are now out the 25-year-old scored a fine strike in the 2-1 defeat to Netherlands on Sunday and has been a solid presence throughout.

1. Bryan Ruiz, Costa Rica

Top of the pile is a player from a nation who were expected to be the whipping boys in a group that also contained Uruguay, England and Italy and yet topped the pool and are now the only one of the four left in.

The Costa Ricans will play the Dutch in the quarter-finals and this Fulham flop has scored twice so far including the winner in a 1-0 triumph over the Italians.
